Abstract: Producing vicinal dioxo compounds, which exhibit a boiling point of = to the reaction temperature at reaction pressure, comprises heterogeneously catalyzed gas phase oxidation of the corresponding vicinal dihydroxy compounds, which exhibit a boiling point of = to the reaction temperature at reaction pressure, in the presence of gases containing oxygen on a catalyst comprising silver as active component and optionally gold, at a reaction temperature of 200-450[deg] C and a reaction pressure of 0.01-1 MPa. Producing vicinal dioxo compounds, which exhibit a boiling point of = to the reaction temperature at reaction pressure, comprises heterogeneously catalyzed gas phase oxidation of the corresponding vicinal dihydroxy compounds, which exhibit a boiling point of = to the reaction temperature at reaction pressure, in the presence of gases containing oxygen on a catalyst comprising silver as active component and optionally gold, at a reaction temperature of 200-450[deg] C and a reaction pressure of 0.01-1 MPa, where the catalyst exhibits a fabric, a knitted fabric or a foil as substrate and exhibits a gold/silver mass ratio in the active components applied on the substrate of 0-25, and is obtained by vapor deposition of at least 10% of silver and optionally gold containing active components on the substrate from the gas phase.
