Abstract:
A method for separating blood into its components and individually storing same is provided. The method has the steps of: providing a container having a body with at least a first and second chamber. Selective fluid communication is also possible between the first and second chamber, and a tube is in fluid communication with the first chamber. The method also has the steps of: passing the blood into the first chamber through the tube; centrifuging the container to separate the blood into plasma, red blood cells and buffy coat within the first chamber; and expressing a portion of the centrifuged blood into the second chamber. In another embodiment, the method for storing blood has the steps of: providing a container with a body having three chambers. The method has steps that include passing the blood into a chamber through the tube; centrifuging the container to separate the blood into plasma, red blood cells and buffy coat and expressing a portion of the separated blood into second and third chambers from the collection chamber.
Abstract:
Systems and methods of collecting blood cells use a first container (16) connected to at least three transfer containers (18, 26, 34). A filtration system (10) is provided with one transfer container (34), which ultimately serves as the storage container for red blood cells free of white blood cells. The two other transfer containers (18, 26) are connected to each other, one (18) of which is empty and one (26) or which contains an additive solution (5) for storage of red blood cells. The empty transfer container (18) is used for storage of platelet concentrate, while the container (26) that originally contained the additive solution is ultimately used to store the platelet-poor plasma component. A portion of the additive solution (5) may be separately passed through the filtration system (10) after filtration of the red cells to flush additional red blood cells from the filtration device (40).

2071835 9208349 PCTABS00013 The present invention provides a blood component storage medium that can be sterilized, through autoclaving, and has improved shelf storage properties. The blood component storage medium comprises a first solution including at least one sugar and having a pH of less than 7. A second, distinct solution, including a bicarbonate buffer is provided having a pH greater than 7. The two solutions are stored separately and are mixed together prior to use as a storage medium.
Abstract:
A container (10) for housing body fluids, preferably blood in its component form, is dis- closed. The container (10) comprises a body (12) defined by flexible walls having an interior (15) for housing the body fluid. Additionally, a means (30) for allowing selective fluid flow allows the blood components to be expressed from one chamber (17) of the container (10) into another (18) to separate and separately house the blood components. The present invention also provides a method for sepa- rating blood into its components via centrifugation and individually storing blood components in sep- arate chambers (17, 18) of the container (10).
