Abstract: The present invention provides an improved affinity membrane device and method for the effective removal of target molecules in plasma. The affinity membrane device is designed for use in an extracorporeal blood circuit and can be employed concurrently with other therapeutic processes for the purification of blood. The device of the present invention consists of hollow fiber membranes having specified dimensions and transfer properties, ligand immobilized to the pore surface of the hollow fibers, and a housing to encase the hollow fibers and allow appropriate entry and exit of the blood. In a preferred embodiment, specific immobilization chemistries are utilized to attach the ligands to the hollow fibers for optimal function.

Abstract: A container for housing a beneficial agent that can be removably coupled to a structure defining a fluid flow path. The container comprises a body defining a first and second interior area separated by a wall that terminates at an opening providing fluid communication between the first and second interior area. A cannula is provided that extends from the body for being removably received by the structure defining the fluid path. The cannula includes an inlet opening and inlet fluid flow path and an outlet opening and outlet fluid flow path. The inlet fluid flow path being in fluid communication with the first interior area, and the outlet fluid flow path being in fluid communication with the second interior area. The second interior area houses the solid beneficial agent and allows fluid that flows through the inlet fluid flow path to pass by at least a portion of the beneficial agent.

Abstract: La presente invencion provee un dispositivo consistente en una membrana de afinidad y un método para la remocion efectiva de moléculas -objetivo en el plasma. El dispositivo membrana de afinidad esta diseñado para usarse en un circuito de sangre extracorporal y puede ser empleado de manera concurrente a otros procesos terapéuticos para la purificacion de la sangre. El dispositivo de la presente invencion consiste en membranas de fibras huecas con dimensiones especificas y propiedades de transportacion, ligador fijado a la superficie de los poros de las fibras huecas, y un contenedor para guardar las fibras huecas y permitir una entrada y salida de la sangre apropiadas. En un prototipo, se utilizan químicas de inmovilizacion especificas para fijar los ligadores a las fibras huecas para su funcionamiento optimo.
