    Abstract: Systems and methods of collecting blood cells use a first container (16) connected to initially collect blood. A filtration system (14) is provided that uses two flow paths (34, 38), the first (38) being a dual purpose path that is initially used to convey plasma and platelets to a pair of transfer/storage containers (30, 32). A second flow path (34) leads to a temporary transfer container (28) through a filtration device (36). The dual purpose fluid path (38) is next used to convey blood cells, not substantially free of undesired matter, from the temporary storage container (28) to a storage container (18). The filtration system (14) is then detached from the blood collection system (12).

    Abstract: A new citrate-based anticoagulant for donor whole blood provides good platelet yield and cell morphology at a significantly reduced risk of donor paresthesia during apheresis procedures. The primary citrate anticoagulant compositions include a citric acid to total citrate ration greater than about 30 %. The anticoagulants are mixed with whole blood to provide an anticoagulated blood mixture which contains a citric acid concentration of greater than about 5.0 mM, a total citrate concentration of less than about 20 mM, and an initial blood pH of less than about 6.75. The platelet rich products including PRP and PC prepared from blood collected in accordance with the invention exhibit better platelet yields and better platelet morphology on storage.

    Abstract: Systems and methods of collecting blood cells, substantially free of undesired matter, use a first container (16), that forms a part of blood collection system (10), to initially collect a quantity of blood cells. A filtration system (14) is then attached to the first container. The filtration system (14) includes a second container (34), a first fluid path (36) that leads to the second container (34) through a filtration device (40), and a second fluid path (38) that leads to the second container (34) bypassing the filtration device (40). Blood cells are conveyed from the first container (16) through the first fluid path (36) and filtration device (40) and into the second container (34) to separate the undesired matter from blood cells. Blood cells, now substantially free of the undesired matter, are then conveyed from the second container (34) through the second fluid path (38), bypassing the filtration device (40), and back into the first container (16). The filtration system (14) is then detached from the blood collection system (10).
