Abstract: Polyether polycarbonate diols based on 1,6-hexanediol and having a molecular weight of from 500 to 12,000 are made by etherifying 50-100 mole % 1,6-hexane-diol in the presence of 0-50 mole % of specified diols and reacting the resultant polyether with a compound selected from diarylcarbonates, dialkyl carbonates, dioxolanones, hexanediol bischlorocarbonic acid esters, phosgene and urea. These diols are particularly useful in the production of polyurethanes having improved physical properties.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process for the production of suspensions of finely-divided polyisocyanates which are obtainable by the surface reaction with from 0.1 to 25 equivalent percent of reactive group per NCO of stabilizers in relatively high molecular weight polyols and/or relatively high molecular weight polyamines having molecular weights from 400 to 6,000 optionally with addition of lower molecular weight polyols and/or aromatic amines having molecular weights of from 60 to 399, which are characterized in that unreacted quantities of stabilizers in the suspension are subsequently partially or completely deactivated by addition of substances having an acylating and/or neutralizing and/or alkylating effect and/or adsorbing effect as "deactivators". In particular, mono- and/or polyisocyanates are used as "deactivators". Deactivated suspensions obtainable in this way do not exhibit rising thickening temperatures during the production of polyurethanes, in particular in large-volume shaped articles. The present invention also relates to deactivated suspensions obtainable by the present process and to the use thereof for polyurethane production.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of homogeneous and cellular polyurethane plastics by the reaction of (a) organic polyisocyanates; (b) compounds containing at least 2 Zerewitinoff-active hydrogen atoms and having molecular weights of from 400 to 10,000; (c) chain extenders, and, optionally, additional (d) short-chained compounds containing at least 2 Zerewitinoff-active hydrogen atoms and having a molar mass of from 32 to 400, as well as, optionally, (e) catalysts, blowing agents and other known additives, is described, which is characterized in that 1,4-3,6-dianhydro-hexites, preferably 1,4-3,6-dianhydro-D-sorbitol and/or 1,4-3,6-dianhydro-D-mannitol, optionally mixed with lower molecular weight compounds, preferably with polyols having a molecular weight of from 62 to 400, particularly preferably butane diol-1,4 are used as the chain extenders. The new chain extenders produce high quality elastomers and foams.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a modified 1,5-naphthylene diisocyanate containing urea and biuret groups comprising reacting (a) 1,5-naphthylene diisocyanate in molten form with (b) a mixture comprising about 0.02 to about 0.5 mole of water per mole of 1,5-naphthylene diisocyanate and about 1 to about 10 parts for each part of water of an organic solvent. The present invention further relates to a process for the preparation of elastomeric moldings comprising reacting by the one-shot or prepolymer process at an isocyanate index of 70 to 130 a modified 1,5-naphthylene diisocyanate containing urea and biuret groups with compounds containing at least two isocyanate-reactive groups and having a molecular weight in the range from about 500 to about 10,000 and, optionally, organic compounds containing isocyanate-reactive groups and having a molecular weight in the range from 60 to 499.

Abstract: Polyurethane elastomers are made by reacting organic polyisocyanates with compounds having at least two groups containing isocyanate-reactive hydrogen atoms and a molecular weight of from 400 to 10,000 and a 1,4-monoanhydro-tetritol in accordance with techniques known to those in the art. Known chain-lengthening agents, auxiliaries and additives may be included in the reaction mixture. The reaction mixtures employed in the process of the present invention have a longer pot life than prior art reaction mixtures. The elastomers produced by this process are shrink stable.
