A motor 24 drives a chart along an abscissa scale to correspond with the movement of a wavelength-scanning mechanism driven by motor 26. Frequency-dividing circuits 30, 32, 36, 38 are adjustable to provide a variation of the abscissa scale. A motor 14 drives a pen marker along an ordinate scale in response to an optical characteristic of the sample, all or a selected part of the input signal being used. The length of the ordinate scale is determined by circuit 22. Predetermined combinations of ordinate and abscissa scales may be selected by a switch 42 to suit, for example, charts with metric or Imperial units. The arrangement is also applicable to circular charts.
