Abstract: A plate assembly for performing multiple filtrations with the use of a vacuum comprises an upper plate 11 with apertures 12 forming sample wells, a membrane sheet 13 forming the floor of each well, a collection plate 19 with individual wells 20 underneath the membrane sheet, aligned with the upper plate apertures, and a drop guide plate 15 between the membrane sheet and the collection plate to guide small quantities of filtrate downward from the membrane into the collection wells. Guide plate 15 comprises individual tubes 41, less than 2.5 mms in diameter, which project into wells 20, and raised lands which clamp the membrane sheet against the underside of upper plate 11 around each aperture 12. Plate 16 enables plate 15 to be clamped to plate 11 by screws 26, forming an assembly which may be latched to lower support plate 21. Plate 21 supports collection plate 19 while defining a space, above and below plate 19, to which vacuum is applied.
