    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain a high selective adsorption of molecules by forming a polymer from a non-functional polymer or a monomer never forming a complex with its absorbed molecule. SOLUTION: An affinity chromatographic medium in the form of a water- insoluble polymer matrix having selectivity for a preliminarily selected molecular species is formed from a non-ionic monomer chemically and physically inactive to the molecular species by polymerizing the monomer in the presence of the molecular species, and extracting the species from the resulting insoluble polymer matrix. In the use of the thus-formed polymer, every electrostatic interaction between the adsorbed molecular species in the polymer and an individual sub-unit or the formation of complex in other forms is substantially lacked. An adsorptive gel which is selective to substantially all molecular species independent from size, and has a three-dimensional molecular structure containing those having no functional group is prepared.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a separating medium for reversed-phase chromatography in a single-stage reaction by polymerizing an aqueous vinyl monomer mixture containing both a specified hydrophobic alkyl methacrylate and a specified detergent. SOLUTION: The production process comprises the steps of: forming a mixture containing a water-soluble monomer (1) selected from the group consisting of vinyl monomers, acrylic monomers and methacrylic monomers, a crosslinking agent (2), an alkyl methacrylate (3) with a 3-30C alkyl and detergent (4) in an aqueous medium and polymerizing components (1) to (3) of the mixture in a single stage reaction. It is desirable that the total amount of components (1) to (3) is 2-50wt.%, and that the molar fraction of the crosslinking agent based on the total of components (1) to (3) is 0.10-0.70. The amount of the alkyl methacrylate is desirably 0.003-0.3 in terms of a molar ratio to the total of components (1) to (3).

    Abstract: Electrophoresis is performed in buffers which exhibit both substantial bufferingcapacity and low electrical conductivity, permitting the separations to be performed at high field strengths without loss of resolution. Four classes of buffering agents are cited as examples: (1) buffering agents with a small number of charged groups per molecule; (2) carrier ampholytes fractionated to a narrow isoelectric point range; (3) low molecular weight buffering ampholytes with an isoelectric point which is close in value to one of the pK values of the ampholyte; and (4) high molecular weight buffering ampholytes in which the acidic and basic groups have the same or very close pK values. These buffering agents are of particular interest in capillary electrophoresis.

    Abstract: Preparation of a separation medium for continuous bed reversed-phase chromatography comprises: (a) forming a mixture composed of (i) a water-soluble monomer selected from vinyl, and (meth)acrylic monomers, (ii) a crosslinking agent, (iii) an alkylmethacrylate in which the alkyl group has 3-30C, and (iv) a detergent, in an aqueous medium; and (b) polymerising (i), (ii), and (iii) in a one-step reaction. Also claimed is a preparation in which the mixture is composed of (i), (ii), (iii) a water-soluble monomer having a terminal vinyl group and a charged group, (iv) an alkyl methacrylate as described, and (v) a detergent as described, with polymerisation of (i), (ii), (iii), and (iv) taking place in a one-step reaction.

    Abstract: Chromatographic beads with pores large enough to serve as through-channels for fast diffusion and a substantial absence of pores of smaller diameters that would cause band broadening due to slow diffusive transport, are formed by suspension polymerization of an aqueous solution of a monomer mixture that includes a total monomer (combination of polymer backbone monomer and crosslinking agent) concentration of 2% to 50% by weight relative to the aqueous solution and a crosslinking agent in an amount such that the mole ratio of crosslinking agent to total monomer is from about 0.1 to about 0.7. The suspension polymerization process involves forming a suspension of aqueous droplets of the monomer mixture in an organic phase.
