The core consists of a resin (I) with a Tg of up to 50 deg C and an elastic modulus of up to 10 dyne/cm . Also claimed is a method of making the waveguide. Pref. (I) is a copolymer of (a) (meth)acrylic acid or a lower alcohol (meth)acrylate with (b-1) an alkoxy- or aryloxy-(poly)alkylene glycol (meth)acrylate of formula H2C=C(R )-CO-(OC-nH2n)m-OR (II) or (b-2) a higher alkyl (meth)acrylate of formula H2C=C(R )-COOR (III) (where R = H or Me; R = alkyl or aryl; n, m = 1-10; R = 8-20C alkyl). Esp. (I) is a copolymer of methyl (meth)acrylate with 2-methoxyethyl (meth)-acrylate or phenoxypolyethylene glycol (meth)acrylate; or a copolymer of methyl (meth)acrylate with a mixt. of 12 and 13C alkyl (meth)acrylates, opt. mixed with a phosphate, aromatic carboxylate, aliphatic carboxylic acid or carboxylate, glycol and/or glycol (meth)acrylate.

Abstract: The lighting system is in the form of a light source (1) with a light transmitting element coupled to a central outlet point (2A). This can be set in the centre of a tube (3) with a fountain outlet. The tube is set with the main fountain that is filled with water (W). A further light source can illuminate the water by housing an immersed light transmitting element (2). The light transmitting element can be in the form of a core of either a visions fluid a flexible solid or a gel in a sealed tube. The tube may be used in a range of illumination applications, such as roadside indicators, road vehicle indicator or for general display. ADVANTAGE - Simple to install.

Abstract: The hose has a hollow tubular sheath (1) enclosing a fluid core (20 with a higher refractive index than that of the sheath between 2 and stoppers (3, 4) for entry and exit of the light. The fluid core (2) is filled in the sheath under pressure. Pref. one end stopper is fitted in the end of the sheath and bonded to the latter before filling with the pressurised fluid and fitting the second end stopper. The pressure of the fluid core is at length equal to the ambient pressure at the min operating temp. and remains below the pressure limit of the sheath at the max operating temp. USE/ADVANTAGE - For transmission of light e.g. between light source and front or rear of road vehicle. Prevents penetration of gas into fluid when used over long period of time, for maintaining transparency characteristic.

Abstract: An optical waveguide hose includes a hollow tubular cladding, a fluid core in the cladding, the fluid having a higher index of refraction than the cladding, and sealing plugs mated with opposite end openings of the cladding. In one form, the core fluid is filled in the cladding under positive pressure. In another form, a sheath of a gas barrier material encloses the outer periphery of the cladding. The pressurized fluid core or the gas barrier sheath prevents air from penetrating into the core, allowing the hose to maintain its light transmission function.

Abstract: The invention relates to an optical waveguide tube comprising a tubular cladding filled with a solid core having a higher refractive index than the cladding. In one form, a resin material having a Tg of up to 50 DEG C. and a modulus of elasticity of up to 109 dyne/cm2 is used as the core. In another form, a copolymer of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or a lower alcohol ester thereof with a higher alkyl (meth)acrylate is used as the core, preferably in combination with a phosphate, aromatic carboxylate, aliphatic carboxylic acid, aliphatic carboxylate or glycol. In a third form, such an optical waveguide tube is prepared by filling a hollow tubular transparent cladding having opposite open ends with a liquid monomeric charge and causing the monomeric charge to polymerize while pressurizing the exposed surfaces of the monomeric charge inwardly from the opposite open ends along an axial direction of the cladding, thereby forming a core within the cladding.
