Abstract:
A variety of methods to prepare a polymer composition containing at least one polymer and at least one modified pigment are described. The methods, in part, involve introducing a slurry containing at least one modified pigment into an emulsion or solution polymer prior to dewatering. Other polymer systems can be used including aqueous based polymerizations and solvent-based polymerizations, which can include free radical polymerizations. Other methods involve the formation of a modified pigment in the presence of an emulsion or solution polymer and then recovering the polymer composition containing the modified pigment. Compositions containing at least one modified pigment and the emulsion or solution polymer are also described as well as uses for the polymer compositions of the present invention.

Disclosed are elastomeric compounds including an elastomer and a silicon-treated carbon black, and optionally including a coupling agent. The elastomeric compound exhibits poorer abrasion resistance in the absence of a coupling agent, lower hysteresis at high temperature and comparable or increased hysteresis at low temperature compared to an elastomer containing an untreated carbon black. A variety of elastomers and formulations employing such elastomers are contemplated and disclosed. Elastomeric compounds incorporating an elastomer and an oxidized, silicon-treated carbon black are also disclosed. Also disclosed are methods for preparing elastomers compounded with the treated carbon black.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of making an aggregate comprising at least a carbon phase and a silicon-containing species phase.SOLUTION: The method includes: introducing a first feedstock into a first stage (9) of a multi-stage reactor; and introducing a second feedstock into the reactor at a location (10) downstream of the first stage. The first and second feedstocks comprise a carbon black-yielding feedstock, and at least one feedstock also comprises a silicon-containing compound. The reactor is operated at a sufficient temperature to decompose the silicon-containing compound and to pyrolize the carbon black-yielding feedstock. An additional method is disclosed which includes making an aggregate comprising a carbon phase and a silicon-containing species phase using multi-stage reactor having at least three stages for introducing a feedstock, wherein at least one of the feedstocks comprises a carbon black-yielding feedstock and wherein at least one of the feedstocks comprises a silicon-containing compound. Besides producing the aggregate comprising a carbon phase and a silicon-containing species phase, silica and/or carbon black may also result from the processes. A further method is disclosed which includes making an aggregate comprising a carbon phase and a metal-containing species phase using a multi-stage reactor having at least two stages for introducing feedstocks, wherein at least one of the feedstocks comprises a carbon black-yielding feedstock and wherein at least one of the feedstocks comprises a metal-containing compound. The aggregates preferably lead to improved wet skid resistance and rolling resistance properties when the aggregates are incorporated into elastomeric compositions.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elastomeric composition which comprises at least one elastomeric component, at least one wet skid enhancing filler, and at least one reinforcing filler for improving the wet skid resistance of the resultant composition.SOLUTION: The wet skid enhancing filler is defined by a high Moh's hardness and large particle size. The resulting elastomeric composition exhibits improved wet skid resistance compared to the same composition having no wet skid enhancing filler. Articles made from the elastomeric compositions are also described as well as methods of improving wet skid resistance and methods of making wet skid resistant materials.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved process for incorporating modified pigments into polymer compositions.SOLUTION: A method of preparing a polymer composition containing at least one polymer and at least one modified pigment involves introducing at least one slurry containing at least one modified pigment into an aqueous polymer solution to form a mixture, wherein, at this stage, the aqueous polymer solution has not been dewatered, and then dewatering the mixture to form the polymer composition.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject product having characteristics comparable to or more excellent than those of usual wire adhesives by laying a wire in a wire adhesive containing an elastomer and a specific aggregate without a cobalt- based adhesion promoter. SOLUTION: In this rubber product, at least one wire is buried in a wire adhesive containing at least one kind of aggregate containing (A) at least one kind of elastomer (e.g. natural rubber, a styrene-butadiene rubber, a polyisoprene, an NBR, a chloroprene, an EPDM copolymer or a blended rubber thereof) and (B) a carbon phase and a silicon-containing compound phase (the Si content is preferably about 0.1-25 wt.% of the aggregate) and no cobalt-based adhesion promoter.

Prezenta inventie se refera la compusi elastomerici care contin negru de fum tratat cu siliciu si, optional, cu continut dintr-un agent de cuplare. Un compus elastomeric, conform inventiei, prezinta rezistenta redusa la abraziune, în absenta agentului de cuplare, histerezis scazut la temperatura ridicata si histerezis comparabil sau mai mare la temperatura scazuta, relativ la un elastomer care contine negru de fum netratat. Este descrisa o mare varietate de elastomeri si formulari care contin astfel de elastomeri. De asemenea, sunt prezenti sicompusi elastomerici care contin un elastomer, un oxidant si negru de fum tratat cu siliciu. Mai sunt descrise un procedeu de tratare si un procedeude preparare a unui compus elastomeric, precum siutilizarea compusului elastomeric pentru fabricare de diferite articole.
