Abstract: A method comprising the steps of: positioning a sealing area of one body near a matching sealing area of another body such that a gap at least partially separates the two sealing areas; initially transferring energy locally to material of a specified one of the bodies along part of the gap while the bodies are in a non-vacuum environment to cause material of the bodies to bridge that part of the gap and partially seal the bodies together along the sealing areas; and subsequently transferring energy locally to material of the specified body along the remainder of the gap while the bodies are in a vacuum environment to cause material of the bodies to bridge the remainder of the gap and complete sealing of the bodies together along the sealing areas.

Abstract: A flat-panel device is fabricated by a process in which a pair of plate structures (40 and 42) are sealed along their interior surfaces (40A and 42B) to opposite edges (44A and 44B) of an outer wall (44) to form a compartment. Subsequently, exterior support structure (64) is attached to the exterior surface of one of the plate structures (40) to significantly increase resistance of the compartment to bending. Exterior support structure (66) is normally likewise attached to the exterior surface of the other plate structure (42) after the sealing operation. The compartment is then typically pumped down to a high vacuum through a suitable pump-out port (46) and closed. By providing the exterior support structure at such a relatively late stage in the fabrication process, the need for using spacers to support the device against external forces is eliminated or substantially reduced while simultaneously avoiding severe fabrication difficulties that arise in attaching the exterior support structure before the sealing operation.

Abstract: A spacer structure for location between a faceplate structure and a backplate structure of a flat panel display so as to resist external forces exerted on the flat panel display, the spacer structure comprising: a spacer wall having (a) a first edge surface for location adjacent a selected one of the faceplate and backplate structures, (b) a second edge surface opposite the first edge surface for location adjacent the remaining one of the faceplate and backplate structures, (c) a first face surface extending between the face surface opposite extending between the edge surfaces, (d) a second the first face surface and edge surfaces, (e) a first end, and (f) a second end distal from the first end; a first spacer clip which clamps the face surfaces largely at the first end of the spacer wall; and a second spacer clip which clamps the face surfaces largely at the second end of the spacer wall.
