Abstract: The ends of two optical fibres to be joined are housed in sleeves which include assembly means for uniting the sleeves front face to front face. A point-line-plane positioning arrangement ensures that each time the connector is re-closed its sleeves take up the same axial disposition with respect to each other. Structure is provided to adjust the axial position of the fibres so that they look into each other at the said same axial disposition. Once set up the connection can be repeatedly opened and closed with reproducible transmission characteristics.

Abstract: A fibre optic connector is described which comprises an end-fitting for each fibre end, an alignment support, and pressing elements. The end-fitting comprises a capillary tube fitted with a shoulder at a defined distance from one of its ends. The terminal face of the fibre is kept coplanar and centralised in this tube. The alignment support has one or more transversal slots or grooves inside it which receive the ends of two fibres each equipped with an end-fitting. The shoulders of the two end-fittings are kept up against the extreme edges of the slot, thus ensuring a predetermined gap or spacing between the terminal faces of the two fibres. The pressing elements partially cross the connection support and emerge from the same side and perpendicular to the inside of each slot, thus ensuring that the two end fittings are against the opposite edge of the slot in which they are kept and also ensuring their axial alignment.

The slabs are temporarily fixed to the sole plate by bolts passing through holes that leave adequate clearance for enabling the positions of the slabs to be individually adjusted relative to the sole plate (3) prior to the slabs being finally fixed by laser spot-welding.

Abstract: The connector block for the optical fibres of an optical signal transmission link has at least one transverse slot (13) into which the ferrules fitted to the ends of a pair of optical fibres are inserted. Two longitudinal grooves (15) intersect each transverse slot (13) and at least one strap (25) is secured to the base of one of the grooves (15), so as to pass across the transverse slot (13) without contacting its edges. The strap (25) supports screws (30, 31) etc. for retaining the ferrules at the ends of the respective optical fibres against the base of the slot (13). Two straps (25) are positioned on respective sides of the centre plane of the connector each with two screws for retaining the ends of a respective pair of optical fibres.

Abstract: A fibre optic end-fitting has a calibrated tube surrounding a bare extreme portion of the fibre. Inside the tube, the end face of the bare fibre is coplanar with the end of the tube and is centralized. A tube-support sleeve is provided, one end of which covers part of the tube while the other end covers the fibre and is kept on the fibre. The middle part of the sleeve, adjacent to the end surrounding the tube, has an internal diameter greater than the diameter of the bare fibre with which it is in contact. A connecting agent, inside the sleeve and the tube, ensure that the bare fibre is kept in position. The middle part of the sleeve has a lateral boring which enables the connection agent to be inserted. This agent comprises a polymerisable liquid (6) forming a cement which is injected into the sleeve and which ascends the tube by capillary force.
