A connection between an underwater coaxial cable and a rigid underwater repeater, Fig. 2 (not shown) comprises a metallic sleeve 6 having bosses 62, 63 embedded in moulded polythene layers 5, 7. The sleeve has a central bore through which passes the conductor 4, and insulation 3 while the outer sheath 2 is welded to the collar 61. The sheath 9 of a connection cable is welded to a machined down part 64 of the boss 63. The central conductor 4 is connected to one terminal passing through an insulating bushing in the repeater cover and the sheath 9 to a second terminal. The mechanical connection between the repeater cover and the underwater cable is formed by two yokes, Fig. 2 (not shown), the first yoke surrounding the repeater, and the second surrounding the end of the cable, the two yokes being assembled by a ball joint.

    Abstract: The connection system and unit is for use particularly in underground telephone cables where cross - talk needs to be minimised. The design is intended to simplify such wire to wire connections and provide a high degree of cable to cable screening. Connections between wires are made via individual terminals arranged diagonally across the length of curved metal elements forming a single cylinder when assembled. Each incoming and outgoing cable is located within the space defined by an inner metal cylinder and integral walls which screen the cables by dividing up the outer cylinder formed by the connection surface.

    Abstract: A fibre optic end-fitting has a calibrated tube surrounding a bare extreme portion of the fibre. Inside the tube, the end face of the bare fibre is coplanar with the end of the tube and is centralized. A tube-support sleeve is provided, one end of which covers part of the tube while the other end covers the fibre and is kept on the fibre. The middle part of the sleeve, adjacent to the end surrounding the tube, has an internal diameter greater than the diameter of the bare fibre with which it is in contact. A connecting agent, inside the sleeve and the tube, ensure that the bare fibre is kept in position. The middle part of the sleeve has a lateral boring which enables the connection agent to be inserted. This agent comprises a polymerisable liquid (6) forming a cement which is injected into the sleeve and which ascends the tube by capillary force.

    Abstract: The light waveguide has at least two optical fibres (1, 2) linked by means of a connector, in which the end of one (1) or both of the two fibres forms a truncated cone (3) defining the front face of the connection. The truncated cone (3) may be formed on the fibre (1) positioned on the transmission side and, in this case, the small base (of the cone), having a diameter less than that of the fibre, constitutes the front face of the connection. Alternatively, the truncated cone may be formed on the fibre positioned on the reception side and, in this case, the large base(of the cone), having a diameter greater than that of the fibre, constitutes the front face of the connection. The waveguide may include a liquid (pref. polyisobutylene), whose refractive index is close to that of the fibre cone, between the front faces of the fibres.
