Abstract: This system is provided for the field of electronic facsimile transmitting of a picture and relates more particularly to the compression of data to reduce the number of bits to be transmitted at a given resolution of the picture. Abstract: The document scanner (100) is designed for use in a facsimile transmission system. It has a high apparent scanning rate whilst reducing the real scanning rate of the head. The scanning head consists of several subheads equally spaced apart along a line and each scanning a short length of that line. The subheads are mounted on a bar driven backwards and forwards across the document by a crank coupling. Each subhead therefore produces an output signal representing one short length of the line being scanned. The document passes through the scanner in the normal way.
