Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily execute upgrading of a MODEM and to eliminate the necessity of recertification by separating the MODEM into a MODEM engine part and a data access arrangement(DAA) part. SOLUTION: Certification bodies of various nations require only a CODEC/ DAA substrate 49 and do not require the certification of the MODEM engine 48. Namely only the substrate 49 is required to be certified by each specific nation and the MODEM engine 48 and a change to a computer system including the engine 48 can easily be executed without requiring recertification of the engine 48. Thus the MODEM engine part 48 and the DAA part 49 are mutually separated. A hose computer interface, a MODEM micro-controller and digital signal processing parts are arranged on the MODEM engine substrate 48. A CODEC and remaining reference DAA parts such as ring detection and hybrid circuits are included in the DAA substrate 49.

Abstract: A modem which is separated into two circuit boards. One board contains the modem engine, while the second board contains the codec and the DAA components. The two boards are connected using only properly isolated digital signals so that the modem engine board does not require certification, only the codec/DAA board requiring certification. The codec/DAA board is contained in a housing to provide proper high voltage protection.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simultaneously perform a full duplex speakerphone operation and audio reproduction like a game, etc., without an external Codec. SOLUTION: At the time of a speakerphone mode, a multiplexer 75 selects a speakerphone audio line 77, a signal sent from a DSP(digital signal processor) interface is supplied to the left channel of a D/A converter 63 and outputted as a left audio output via a mixer 59. When synthetic audio is desired to be reproduced even in a speakerphone mode, a multiplexer 81 selects the output of a mixer 79 a monotone digital signal which represents the sum of left and right audio channels which are synthesized is outputted as a right audio output via the right channel of the converter 63 and the mixer 59. Therefore, audio reproduction of a game, etc., is heard through the right speaker, while audio reproduction of a full duplex speakerphone operation is heard through the left speaker.
