A novel crosslinker composition based on a combination of 1,3,5-tris-(2-carboxyethyl)isocyanurate and a dicarboxylic acid crosslinking agent is provided. Also provided is a curable epoxy composition employing, as the cross-linker component, a combination of 1,3,5-tris-(2-carbocyethly)isocyanurate and a dicarboxylic acid crosslinking agent, which curable composition finds use, for example, in coating applications. When cured, these coatings provide hard, durable and resistant films of low gloss.

New classes of 1,3,5-triazine compounds of formula I and compositions containing the same are disclosed, which are particularly suitable for use as a crosslinking agent in curable compositions such as coatings, particularly in combination with active hydrogen groups-containing materials. The 1,3,5-triazine compounds of the present invention do not release formaldehyde as a volatile by-product during cure, and certain of these compounds may be used in curable compositions which may be cured at relatively low temperatures. Processes for preparing such compounds, compositions containing the same, as well as additional uses thereof, are also disclosed. In formula (I), X is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aralkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, aralkylthio, arylthio, amido, sulfonamido, sulfonate, amino, a group of formula (II), a group of formula (III), and a group of formula (IV). At least bis-imido 1,3,5-triazines and processes of preparing the same are disclosed. Also disclosed are prepolymers having at least bis-imido functionality and curable compositions comprising at least bis-imido 1,3,5-triazines or prepolymers thereof in combination with active hydrogen and/or epoxy functional materials. The at least bis-imido 1,3,5-triazines and prepolymers may be advantageously employed as crosslinking agents which crosslink by a ring opening reaction that eliminates the release of volatile organic compounds.
