Abstract: A magnetic stripe encoding apparatus (24) encodes information onto a magnetic stripe (22) of a card (20). A card carriage (26) moves the card (20) along a card transport path between a top rail (28) and a bottom rail (30). The magnetic stripe (22) passes an encoding write head (36) and a read head (40) for writing and verifying information on the stripe (22). Heads (36, 40) mount on a bracket (44) which allows only twisting motion and movement toward and away from the card (20) so that good contact is maintained between the magnetic stripe (22) and the heads (36, 40). One embodiment of the card carriage (26) includes spring biased pawls (60, 62) which are biased into the card transport path for engaging the card (20) and rotate away from the card transport path so that the pawls (60, 62) do not engage the card (20).

Abstract: An apparatus and method for printing a graphic design on a hard plastic workpiece such as a credit card blank includes a thermal printing element which is supported by a head assembly that has been designed a single link, to have low mechanical compliance in a horizontal plane and yet to allow the print head to align with a print roller. A cleaning assembly is further provided which includes a pair of cleaning rollers having an adhesive coating; and a novel arrangement for stripping particulate matter away from the cleaning rollers after a predetermined number of cards have been cleaned. A number of stepper motors are provided to perform the cleaning and printing functions. The stepper motors are controlled by a local control system which monitors a number of sensors provided on the cleaning and printing stations and is subservient to an overall system controller. The invention further includes a novel method of operation, a cassette for use with the printing station and a novel thermal printing foil.

Abstract: The present invention provides for dynamically assigning addresses and determining the configuration of a plurality of programmable function modules (16) connected to an electrical conductor, such as a serial bus (22). The programmable function modules (16) are interconnected by a control line (18). A programmable controller (18) will first transmit an enabling signal on the control line (18) and then will transmit predetermined addressing information on the serial bus (22). The first function module will then access the serial bus (22) and retrieve the addressing information, assign itself a unique address, modify the addressing information, return the modified addressing information to the serial bus (22), and enable the adjacent function module (16). Each function module (16) will be assigned an address in a similar fashion. The programmable controller will receive the modified address information from the final function module (16) and will thereby know the number, the connection sequence, and the address of each function module (16).
