Abstract: An apparatus and method for printing a graphic design on a hard plastic workpiece such as a credit card blank includes a thermal printing element which is supported by a head assembly that has been designed a single link, to have low mechanical compliance in a horizontal plane and yet to allow the print head to align with a print roller. A cleaning assembly is further provided which includes a pair of cleaning rollers having an adhesive coating; and a novel arrangement for stripping particulate matter away from the cleaning rollers after a predetermined number of cards have been cleaned. A number of stepper motors are provided to perform the cleaning and printing functions. The stepper motors are controlled by a local control system which monitors a number of sensors provided on the cleaning and printing stations and is subservient to an overall system controller. The invention further includes a novel method of operation, a cassette for use with the printing station and a novel thermal printing foil.

Abstract: A printer that provides improved image placement on documents including identification documents such as identification cards, credit and debit cards, and the like, and passports. The printer eliminates blind moves and mechanism errors to achieve repeatable image placement on the document surface with the correct horizontal image placement dimension. The printer senses an edge of the document to immediately initiate printing. The edge of the document can be either the leading edge or the trailing edge. The edge of the document can also be sensed by a separate sensor to initiate movement of a print head of the print station toward a print position.

Abstract: Appareil et procédé d'impression d'un dessin graphique sur une pièce en plastique dur telle qu'une ébauche de carte de crédit. L'appareil comprend un élément d'impression thermique qui est supporté par un assemblage à tête ayant été conçu avec une seule liaison pour avoir peu de déformation mécanique dans un plan horizontal tout en permettant à la tête d'impression d'être alignée avec un rouleau d'impression. Un ensemble de nettoyage comprend une paire de rouleaux nettoyants ayant un revêtement adhésif, et un nouvel agencement pour enlever la matière particulaire des rouleaux de nettoyage après avoir nettoyé un nombre prédéterminé de cartes. Plusieurs moteurs pas à pas sont prévus pour effectuer les opérations de nettoyage et d'impression. Les moteurs pas à pas sont commandés par un système de commande local qui contrôle plusieurs détecteurs montés dans les stations de nettoyage et d'impression et qui est asservi à une unité de commande générale du système. L'invention concerne en outre un nouveau procédé de fonctionnement, une cassette s'utilisant avec la station d'impression et une nouvelle feuille d'impression thermique.
