    Abstract: A printer (10) including a print head assembly (52) and a transport belt (14) for transporting a plastic card (110) through the printer (10). The transport belt (14) includes a surface self-adhering to a surface of the plastic card (110). The printer includes a print head (50) which is moved across a surface of the card (110) while printing on the card (110). The printer (10) includes a print head controller for interfacing between a microprocessor (301) and a continuous tone print head (50), the number of print intensities either fixed or selected by the microprocessor (301) into a first-in first-out (FIFO) memory (319), where a controller state machine (325) reads the image data from the FIFO memory (319) and compares each pixel value to a level value generated by the state machine (325) and loads a one-bit value into the print head (50) for a number of iterations equal to the number of print intensities to initiate printing.

    Abstract: Processes and systems are described that can produce images including both three dimensional holographic images and two dimensional variable data, which can provide personalized security features in a document. A photosensitive film can be pressed against a first reflective optical device. A laser beam can be directed through a selected first area of the photosensitive film onto the first reflective optical device to produce a three dimensional holographic image in the photosensitive film. A previously masked second area of the photosensitive film can be pressed against a second reflective optical device. The laser beam can project an image constructed by a spatial light modulator and can be directed through the second area of the photosensitive film onto the second reflective optical device to produce a two dimensional image in the second area. During the process, the web tension of the photosensitive film is controlled.

    Abstract: A printer that provides improved image placement on documents including identification documents such as identification cards, credit and debit cards, and the like, and passports. The printer eliminates blind moves and mechanism errors to achieve repeatable image placement on the document surface with the correct horizontal image placement dimension. The printer senses an edge of the document to immediately initiate printing. The edge of the document can be either the leading edge or the trailing edge. The edge of the document can also be sensed by a separate sensor to initiate movement of a print head of the print station toward a print position.
