A process for the production of an initiator for the oxidation of hydrocarbons comprises oxidation of a hydrocarbon in the liquid phase by means of an oxygen containing gas in the presence of a metal salt and oxidation of the hydrocarbon in the liquid phase by means of an oxygen containing gas in the presence of a partial quantity of the initial oxidation product from the earlier process steps. A process for the production of an initiator (I) for the oxidation of hydrocarbons comprises: (a) oxidation of a hydrocarbon in the liquid phase by means of an oxygen containing gas in the presence of a metal salt; (b) oxidation of a hydrocarbon, identical to that used in (A), in the liquid phase by means of an oxygen containing gas in the presence of a partial quantity of the oxidation product from (A) and; (c) oxidation of a hydrocarbon, identical to that used in (A), in the liquid phase by means of an oxygen containing gas in the presence of a partial quantity of the oxidation products from the earlier process steps whereby step (B) is repeated at least once and a partial amount of the oxidation product from an earlier process step is added. Preparation of composition containing functionalized polyhedral silicon-oxygen oligomer cluster comprises conversion of two different silane compounds in the presence of base catalyst, where the rate constants relative to the saponification of the silane compound are in the same order of magnitude. An independent claim is included for a composition comprising the functionalized polyhedral silsesquioxane compound obtained by the above method.
