    Abstract: 1,175,624. Zirconium silicate pigments. DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER SCHEIDEANSTALT. 10 March, 1967 [12 March, 1966], No. 11380/67. Heading C1M. Zirconium silicate pigments are produced by heating sodium zirconium silicate with an ammonium salt and a colour donating metal compound at 750‹ to 1300‹ C. The resulting pigment is ground and washed to remove sodium salts. Addition of a mineralizer, e.g. an alkaline earth metal halide or a lead compound may lower the temperature required for reaction and increase the colour intensity of the pigment. Colour donating metals specified are V, Pr, Fe, Cr, Bi, Ni and Co and they may be present in the anion of the ammonium salt.

Silicon tetrahalides are prepared by reacting one or-more halosilanes of the formula H n SiX 4-n, in which X is a halogen and n is an integer from 1 to 3, with a hydrogen halide at a temperature of from 200‹ to 800‹ C. in the presence of an inert solid material having a large surface area such as active carbon, finely divided aluminium oxide or silicon dioxide. In Examples 1 and 2, a mixture of SiCl 4 , HSiCl 3 , H 2 SiCl 2 and H 2 prepared by reacting silicon with hydrogen chloride is converted to a mixture containing almost no H 2 SiCl 2 by passage through a bed of active carbon: in Example 3 the initial mixture contained no H 2 or H 2 SiCl 2 : in Example 4 a mixture of H 2 SiCl 2 and HSiCl 3 was converted to a product containing mainly HSiCl 3 with 10% SiCl 4 : in Example 5 a mixture of HSiCl 3 and HBr was converted to SiCl 3 Br.
