Abstract: Pure N-alkyl formamides are obtained by reacting an olefin or alcohol with hydrogen cyanide according to the Ritter reaction in the presence of an acid. The N-alkyl formamide formed is extracted from the unneutralized acid reaction solution with a polar acid stable organic solvent. The N-alkyl formamide can be recovered from the organic solvent in conventional manner, e.g., by distillation, for example in a vacuum.
