Abstract:
A power operating system for opening and closing a vehicle liftgate (12) has a pair of drive units (22) supported on the vehicle pillars at the sides of the liftgate opening. Each drive unit includes a vertically oriented channel (24) and a rack bar (34) that moves in the channel. A link (40) is universally attached to the rack bar at one end and universally attached to the liftgate at the opposite end. The rack bar is raised and lowered by a power unit (46) that has a motor driven pinion gear (56) that meshes with the rack bar. Raising and lowering the rack bar opens and closes the liftgate via the link.
Abstract:
A vehicle has a power operated liftgate (12) and at least one power unit (20) comprising a fixed linear guide channel (24) and a follower (30) that moves in the guide channel. The follower (30) is universally connected to a rod (34) at one end and the opposite end of the rod is universally connected to the vehicle lift gate. A flexible drive loop (46, 56 or 58) which is attached to the follower wraps part way around two pulleys (42, 44) at opposite ends of the guide channel. The flexible drive loop is driven by a bi-directional drive unit (48) that includes a reversible electric motor (49), an electromagnetic clutch (52) and a drive wheel (50) that engages the flexible drive loop. The flexible drive loop may be a drive cable (56), a drive tape(58), or a drive chain (46) or a combination of cable, tape and/or chain.

Abstract:
A window regulator mechanism (18) for raising and lowering a window that slides up and down in a hollow closure (12). The window regulator mechanism includes a base plate (20) that supports a tape drive that pulls the window up and pulls the window down. The tape (28) wraps around upper and lower rollers (25, 27) that rotate on axes that are substantially parallel to the length of the closure. Two slack take-up devices for the tape are disclosed. An alternate window regulator mechanism (118) drives the tape (128) with conformation and does not need any slack take-up.
