Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify a welding error surely by recording and evaluating the side observation of a seam additionally using a method for observing and evaluating a welding seam from above. SOLUTION: Thin plates 6, 7 are welded at a seam 26 where a camera 23 and a line projector 24 are disposed above. Furthermore, a camera 25 is disposed while inclining at an angle of 45 deg. against the plane of the thin plate, for example, so that the seam 26 can be observed from the side. Images from two cameras 23, 25 are evaluated by an evaluation unit 27. In this regard, two images of the seam 26 can be combined electronically into one image and evaluated. The observation angle α can be selected differently from 45 deg., e.g. in the range of 0-85 deg.. The cameras 23, 25 advantageously observe same part of the seam 26, i.e., a same projection line.

Abstract: In the welding together of sheet-metal blanks (6,7) an image of a line pattern projected across the weld seam is captured by a camera (31) and evaluated to inspect the weld seam. For improved inspection, a sidewards view of the weld seam (26) is obtained, eg. by means of a prism (30), in addition to the view from above. This affords an improved and more accurate inspection of the weld seam.
