Abstract: Method and device for detecting the presence of a part in a mechanical assembly. According to the method, an ultrasonic emitter 10 is applied at a chosen location in the mechanical assembly and an ultrasonic receiver 12 at another location in this assembly, separated from the first by a path which of necessity passes through the member 8 whose presence it is desired to monitor, an ultrasonic wave is emitted, the time of flight of the ultrasonic wave between the emitter 10 and the receiver 12 is measured, and this measured time T is compared with at least one predetermined set-point value T0, T'0, the presence or absence of the member is deduced from the value of the difference between at least one of the set-point values T0, T'0 and the measured value T. Preferably, an upper reference value T'0 and a lower reference value T0 are determined, the measured value T is compared with T0, a signal indicating the absence of a washer is displayed if T is less than T0 or greater than T'0.

Abstract: An open dome-shaped enclosure 6 is disposed against the external surface of the lining 1, inside the liquid and in the zone to be monitored, by means of the periphery 10 of its opening fitted with a seal. A partial vacuum is created within the enclosure and a beam of ultrasonic waves is sent through the enclosure 6 at its upper part, then the ultrasonic beam is picked up and its attenuation after having passed through the enclosure 6 is measured. In the case of a leak, air bubbles passing through the lining 1 cause attenuation of the ultrasound.
