    Abstract: The tube (12), e.g. a vapour generator tube, set in a tubular block (10), is restored by plating. A metallic layer (18) is deposited electrolytically on a surface of the tube, in a zone (14) extending along part of the tube length. The metallic layer (18) is a magnetic, with a thickness greater than 0.5 mm. The deposited metallic layer may have sufficient thickness to support the stresses on the tube in service and be between 0.5 and 1.5 mm. In the axial direction, the length of layer may be between 100 and 200 mm. The deposit may be an alloy of nickel and boron, the boron being less than 5% by weight. The electrolysis may be by pulsed current.

    Abstract: A metal wall is heated to over 90, preferably 120-180 deg. C while in contact with an aqueous solution at above atmospheric pressure to induce a chemical reaction which coats the wall with nickel. Also claimed is coating the interiors of the tubes (5) of a steam generator associated with a pressurised water-cooled nuclear reactor by a chemical reaction, wherein an aqueous solution is circulated through the tubes, which are heated by circulating a hot liquid (21), preferably water at elevated pressure, around the outsides of the tubes in the secondary coolant space.
