    Abstract: Laser light from LD (laser diode) is guided through a fiber to be projected onto a reflector. A receiver detects a return beam of modulated light reflected by the object and outputs a signal reflecting a phase difference between the laser light and the modulation signal. The frequency of the modulation signal is changed based on the signal value so as to finally achieve phase lock. When the phase lock fixes the frequency of the modulation signal, the frequency always corresponds to a distance from LD to the reflector or a group index of a substance filling the optical path. Thus, the distance to the object or the group index of the substance filling the optical path at the time of phase lock can be determined in a simple manner and with a high accuracy, based on the output frequency at the time of phase lock.

    Abstract: SUM and CARRY output signals of a first optical half adder are provided to one input terminal of a second optical half adder and an optical latch memory, respectively, and an output signal of the optical latch memory is provided to the other input terminal of the second optical half adder. Input and output of the two optical half adders and optical latch memory are performed through an optical signal. Each optical half adder includes two light-receiving elements each having a symmetrical electrode arrangement in which two Schottky junctions are connected to each other opposite in polarity, and peripheral elements of resistors, a capacitor and an amplifier. The optical latch memory is an optical flip-flop memory in which a high-speed light-receiving element produces an electric signal in response to an input optical signals, and a high-speed light-emitting element produces, in response to the electric signal guided from the light-receiving element, feed-back light to be applied to the light-receiving element and an output optical signal.

    Abstract: A fluorescent characteristic inspecting apparatus comprises a light source 12 for exciting a specimen via an optical system 14; a device 16 for moving the measurement position of the specimen; an optical system 18 applying photoluminescence from the specimen to a high speed optical detector 20 for detecting data on a time intensity waveform of the photoluminescence in synchronization with the operation of the light source; and a signal processing device 22 for analyzing the data on the time intensity waveform at a plurality of measurement points to obtain the spatial intensity distribution and lifetime distribution of the photoluminescence or the correlation distribution of both. A spectroscope 60 may be placed in front of a 2-D streak camera 20 which is triggered by a signal from a photodiode viewing a pulsed light source 12. A CCD camera viewing a fluorescent screen on the streak camera obtains the time and wavelength distribution of fluorescence from each point of the specimen.
