    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a modified hydrocarbon resin having improved abrasion resistance and wettability and desirably used as a binder of a printing ink by reacting a specified unsaturated hydrocarbon with a fatty acid, an α,β- ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, a divalent-metal compound, an alcohol and a natural resin under specified conditions. SOLUTION: This resin is obtained by a reaction among a 4-10C di or poly- unsaturated linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon or a mixed or non-mixed oligomer thereof (A) having a degree of oligomeration of 2-10, a fatty acid and/or a fatty acid ester (B), an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof (C), a divalent-metal compound (D), an alcohol (E) and a natural resin or a natural resin acid (F). This reaction is performed in two or more stages. Component A is reacted with either of components B and F in the first stage, and formed polymer is reacted with at least one of components C, D and E in the subsequent stages.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a binder resin which can exhibit improved abrasion resistance and wetting performances when used in black ink and is desirably used for especially toluene intaglio printing ink by reacting a specified unsaturated hydrocarbon with a natural resin, an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid, a divalent- metal compound and a fatty acid under specified conditions. SOLUTION: This resin comprises recurring units derived from compounds selected from groups of (A) 4-10C di- or poly-unsaturated linear or branched or cyclic hydrocarbons and mixed or non-mixed oligomers thereof having a degree of oligomeration of 2-10, (B) natural resins or natural resin acids, (C) α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and/or anhydrides thereof, (D) divalent-metal compounds and (E) fatty acids, respectively. This is obtained by reacting first component A with component B and reacting the formed copolymer with components C, D and E at 100-300 deg.C under the exclusion of water.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a binder resin for an improved toluene intaglio printing ink, having an improved abrasion resistance and an improved wetting characteristic against a carbon black, and capable of preparing a quick drying ink, etc. SOLUTION: This modified hydrocarbon resin is obtained by reacting at least each one kind of compounds in each of the groups; (A) a 4-10C unsaturated hydrocarbon, or a mixed or a not mixed oligomers thereof having 2-10 degree of polymerization, (B) a fatty acid or a fatty acid ester, (C) a natural resin and/or a natural resin acid, (D) an α,β-olefinic unsaturated carboxylic acid and acid anhydride thereof, (E) a divalent metal compound. In this case, the reaction can be done in two or more steps, at least each one of compounds in groups (A) and (B) are reacted in the first step, in the following step, the products of the upstream steps are reacted with at least one kind of the compound in the groups (D) and (E), and each of the reactions in the first two steps are performed in the presence of at least one kind of the compounds in the group (C).

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel lowly viscous binder resin for toluene intaglio printing ink, having improved abrasion resistance and improved wettability with black ink, and showing a good heat stability in its production. SOLUTION: This resin is produced by reacting (A) a 4-10C linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon having at least two unsaturations and/or an oligomer thereof having a degree of oligomeration of 2-10 with (B) a natural resin and/or a natural resin acid, (C) an α,β-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or an anhydride thereof, (D) a divalent-metal compound, (E) a carboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of aromatic and saturated aliphatic carboxylic acids, and (F) a fatty acid ester. This reaction is carried out in at least two stages including stage 1 where compound (A) is reacted with compound (B) and stage 2 and subsequent stages where the reaction product from the preceding stage is reacted with at least one compound selected among compounds C, D, E and F at 100-300 deg.C under the exclusion of water.

    Abstract: Oil-soluble, phenolic resin-modified natural resin acid esters which can form self-gelling mineral oil solutions and, in the form of gel varnishes, can advantageously be used as binder resins in printing inks for offset printing and letterpress printing, and process for their preparation from natural resins, phenols, aldehydes, a condensation catalyst, esterifying agents and modifiers by reacting the components at temperatures in the range from 80 to 300 DEG C, preferably with initial introduction of individual components and metering in of the remaining components, where the combined use of a magnesium compound as condensation catalyst and the continuous removal of the water of reaction through the condensation reaction by azeotropic distillation with concomitant use of an inert organic solvent as distillation entrainer is essential and crucial for the self-gelling property of the processed product.

    Abstract: Cyclopentadiene-modified alkyd resins obtained by reaction of naturally occurring, unsaturated fatty acid esters with cyclopentadiene compounds under pressure, transesterification of the resulting adducts with polyols which contain at least three hydroxyl groups, and esterification with aromatic or cycloaliphatic polycarboxylic acids or anhydrides thereof. These resins are employed in the preparation of printing inks for offset printing. The novel resins impart an improved gloss to these printing inks.
