Abstract: In the mfr. of printing plates, a hydrophilic layer on a carrier foil is produced by thermal spraying. In the method: a) the surface of the carrier foil is mechanically micro-roughened so that its roughness Ra lies within the range from 0.3 to 1.5 mu m; b) a permanently adhering hydrophilic coating on this surface is produced by thermal spraying with powdered oxides and/or oxide mixtures with a grain size within the range between 40 and 1 mu m. The method is used to produce the working elements of offset printing plates.

Abstract: The prodn. of a flat-bed printing plate from a light-sensitive material (I) consisting of (A) a suitable film base, (B) a photopolymerisable layer and (C) a transparent outer film provided with a mask which is opaque to actinic light, comprises exposing the material to light through the mask and developing layer (B) to form an image. Special features of this system are that (a) material (I) has a hydrophilic interlayer (A/B) between layers (A) and (B), (b) the adhesion of layer (B) to layer (A/B) and/or layer (C) is altered by exposure to light, and (c) the exposed material is developed by pulling layer (C) away from the base (A). Also claimed is a light-sensitive material (I) for the above process. Pref. layer (B) contains (1) a polymeric binder, (2) a radically polymerisable cpd. and (3) a cpd. or combination of cpds. which is capable of initiating the polymerisation of cpd. (2) under the action of actinic light.
