Title compds.[I; R = halogen, CF3, NO2, CH, C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, C1-4 alkyl thio; A= O, S, NH, N-C1-4 alkyl; R1 = H, C1-4 alkyl; Z = -C(O)OR2, C(S)NH2, CN, n = 0,1,2; R2 = H, C1-12 alkyl, C5-6 cyclo alkyl, C3-6 alkenyl, halo- C3-6 alkenyl; R4,R5 = H, C1-6 alkyl, hydroxy-C1-6 alkyl, C5-6 cyclo alkyl, substituted phenyl, having herbicidal property, were prepd. by reacting compd(II) with compd.(III). Thus, the mixt. of 2-(4'-hydroxyphenoxy)-propionic ethyl ester 42g; CaCO3 33.1 g and acetonitrile 300 ml was refluxed for 90 min. 2-Chloro benzimidazole 33.9 g was added, refluxed for 30 hr, filtered and acetonitrile was removed to give 60.7 g I.

[I; R2 = C1-6 alkyl, C1-6 alkoxy; R3 = C1-6 alkyl; X = O, S; n = 1-3 were prepd. by reaction of II(R4 = halogen) and III(R5 = halogen). 0.6 kg I[(hal)n = 2-F; R2 = OMe; R3 = Me; X = S completly controlled Alopecurus myosuroides, Setaria lutescens, Poa annua, Lolium multiflorum, Echinochloa crus-galli, and other weeds.
Abstract:
Compounds of the formula I exhibit, in the pre-emergence process and in the post-emergence process, a good herbicidal action against a number of dicotyledonous weeds, they are well tolerated in monocotyledonous crops, such as wheat, barley, rice, sorghum and maize, and are also selectively active in some dicotyledonous crops such as soy beans, groundnuts and the like.

Herbicidal agents containing as active ingredient a compound of the formula in which R represents halogen, C1-C4-alkyl, C1-C2-alkoxy or C1-C2-alkylthio, C1-C2-halogeno-alkyl, NO2SO2CH3, SO2NH2, -COOCH3, CN, with the proviso that R2 cannot be alkoxy when (R)n is alkyl, R1 and R3 represent C1-C6-alkyl, R2 represents C1-C6-alkyl, CH2Cl or C1-C6-alkoxy, X is oxygen or sulfur and n is an integer of from 1 to 3 are especially useful for combatting annual weed grasses in dicotyledonous and even monocotyledonous crop plants.
