Abstract: The use of polymers contg. repeating units of formula (I) as electroluminescent materials is claimed: A , A = arylene or heteroarylene gps. with one or more rings, opt. bridged and/or condensed and opt. substd.; A = monovalent aryl or heteroaryl gps. opt. modified as above. Also claimed are: (i) electroluminescent material contg. one or more polymers of formula (I); (ii) a process for the prodn. of such material by: (a) polycondensation of an organophosphorus cpd. of formula Z2P(O)-CH2A -CH2P(O)Z2 (III) with a diketone of formula A -CO-A -CO-A (II) in the presence of a base to give polymer (I); and (b) casting the polymer as a film on a substrate, and (iii) an electroluminescent system with one or more active layers, at least one of which contains polymer (I).

Abstract: The use of poly(phenylene-vinylene) derivs. with repeat units of formula (I) as electroluminescent materials is claimed: -A -(A )C=CH-A -CH=C(A )- (I) A -A = opt. substd., mono- or multi- nuclear aryl and/or heteroaryl gps. opt. bridge-coupled and/or condensed with A and A being divalent and A monovalent. Also claimed are: (a) an electroluminescence material contg. one or more polymers of formula (I); (b) a polymer of formula (I) with A -A being heterocyclic residues; (c) a process for producing an electroluminescence material comprising (i) condensing a phosphoorganic cpd. of formula (III) with a diketone of formula (II) with the use of a basic condensation agent to form a polymer of formula (I) Z2-PO-CH2-A -CH2-PO-Z2 (III) A -CO-A -CO-A (II); Z = alkoxy (e.g. EtO) or aryl (e.g. Ph); and (ii) coating the obtd. polymer in the form of a film on a substrate; and (d) an electroluminescent device having one or more active layers, novel in that at least one of these active layers contains a polymer of formula (I).
