Abstract: In a new automated process for the selection of microorganisms, (A) agar blocks enriched with a nutrient medium are produced under sterile conditions: (B) the agar blocks are each inoculated with 1 drop of spore suspension, photometric control being used to ensure that as a rule each drop contains only one spore; (C) the inoculated blocks are kept in an incubator under conditions permitting colony formation; (D) an agar block contg. a spore colony is placed on a nutrient medium mixed with test organisms; and (E) after again keeping in an incubator, from colony diameter and zone of inhibition diameter, the index of potency is determined by computer, and selection is made on the basis of the index. Selection of strains for antibiotic prodn. or for the prodn. of other microbial prods. Efficiency is improved, so that the number of microorganisms that can be determined per unit time is increased.
