    Abstract: 2,3,6-Trifluorophenol derivatives and ethers of formula (I) are new; in which R = hydrogen (H), 1-6 carbon (C) (fluoro)alkyl, benzyl or benzyl substituted by 1-4 C alkyl, 1-4 C alkoxy or halogen; X = H, chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br) or iodine (I); and X not = R. (I) are prepared by (i) decarboxylating a (di)carboxylic acid of formula (II) in basic solvent(s) in the presence of a decarboxylation catalyst at 120-220 degrees C; (ii) optionally acidifying the reaction mixture; (iii) separating the decarboxylated product; (iv) optionally introducing the group X = Cl, Br or I by halogenation; and (v) optionally introducing R by etherification if R not = H; in which R' = H and R not = H or especially R' = R; n = 2 or especially 1.
