Abstract: The activity of supported silver catalysts, which have been used for the direct oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide with molecular oxygen or air and to which from 1 to 1,000 parts, per 1 million parts of catalyst, of cesium and/or rubidium have been applied, is improved by washing the catalyst with an inert liquid prior to the application of cesium and/or rubidium.

Abstract: Aliphatic and cyclic perfluoroalkyl ethers are prepd. by (A) reacting a mono- or polyalcohol with prim. and/or sec. alcohol gps., of formula (CH2OH)a-R'(OH)b (I) where R' is CnH2n+2-(a+b), where n = 1-10, c = 0-3, a and b = 0-4 and a + b >=1, or HO- (CH2)d-CH2CHR"-O e H (II), where R" is H and d = 0-4 or R" and d = O, and e = 2 or 3, in soln. in an aprotic polar solvent, with hexafluoropropylene in presence of trialkylamines, or with C2F4, at between -30 and +100 degrees C, to yield (CH2OCxF2xH)a (III) or HCxF2x-O- (CH2)d-CH2CHR"-O- eCxF2xH (IV), where x = 2 or 3, and (B) electrolysing III or IV in soln. in anhydrous HF at between -20 degrees C and +30 degrees C and tension 4-7.5 V to yield (CF2OCxF2x+l)a (V) or CxF2x+l-O- (CF2)d-CF2CFR"f-O eCxF2x+l (VI), where R'f is CnF2n+2-(a+b) R"f is F and d = 0-4 or R"f is CF3 and d + O. V and VI have great chemical stability, low dielectric constant, high breakthrough tension, and low loss factor in high frequency alternating fields.

Abstract: Mono- or polyhydric alcohols of the alkan-, tetrahydrofuran- or tetrahydropyran series or di- or tri-alkyleneglycols are dissolved in an aprotic polar solvent and reacted with C3F6 in the presence of trialkylamines, or with tetrafluoroethylene to give the corresponding tetrafluoroethyl- or hexafluoropropyl ethers. The solution of the fluoroethers in anhydrous hydrofluoric acid is electrolyzed. Hydrogen-free perfluoroethers are obtained.

Abstract: The multiple-tube reactor for testing solid catalysts used in gas conversion processes esp. the prodn. of methanol vinyl chloride or ethylene oxide by direct oxidn., comprises a conventional reactor with tube support plate. the tube with the catalyst under investigation is connected via a separate sample tube to a valve attached to an outlet pipe on the inspection cover below the outlet port. The sampling tube is half the dia. of the reactor tube to which it is attached via a screw flange. Two reactor tubes are emptied and then filled with the catalyst to be tested. They are fitted with the sampling tubes as above. The samples taken from these and from the reactor are checked in a gas chromatograph. Several samples are taken under various operating conditions over a period of time.
