    Abstract: 1,3-Difluorobenzene is prepared by catalytic elimination of halogen from a 1,3-difluorohalobenzene by reacting a 1,3-difluorohalobenzene of the formula (1) in which R to R denote H, Cl or Br and at least one of the radicals R to R stands for Cl or Br, in the presence of a palladium catalyst and of an amine, if appropriate in the presence of water or of an organic solvent which is inert to the reactants and the reaction conditions, with hydrogen under pressure and at temperatures from about 70@ to about 140@C.

(I') of formula (I; R = NO2, NH2, CN or Cl) are new. Also claimed is the use of (I') in the prodn. of 2-chloro-3,4,5-trifluorobenzoic acid (IV) and antibacterial agents (V).
