The antibiotic moenomycin (Specification 977,327) is separated into its components A, B and C by column chromatography on silica gel using as eluting agents mixtures of watermiscible alcohols and aqueous ammonia or aqueous C 1-4 amines. Mixtures of n-propanol and SN.NH 4 OH are preferred in which the content of NH 4 OH is increased. First impurities and then the components are eluted, and are recovered from pooled fractions by the addition of a non-solvent e.g. ether. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise monomycin A, B and C or a physiologically tolerable salt thereof, in admixture or conjunction with a phermaceutically suitable carrier.

The antibiotic activity of moenomycin complex (Specification 977,327) or its components A, B and C against gram-positive pathogenic germs is enhanced by hydrogenation. The hydrogenation is carried out with the aid of precious metal catalysts (e.g. platinum) or Raney nickel in a polar solvent such as water, glacial acetic acid, methanol or dimethyl formamide. In the case of the hydrogenated moenomycin complex, the complex may be separated into the hydrogenated single components A, B and C by the process of Specification 1,126,196. Physical data for the hydrogenated compounds are provided. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a carrier and a hydrogenated moenomycin complex or hydrogenated component A, B or C.
