Abstract: Ferroelectric liquid-crystal polymers containing Si and corresponding to formula (I), where z = CH3 or a group according to formula (II): (CH2)a(-B)b-M (-A )c(-M )d(-A )e(-M )f(-A )g-R , provided that at least two z substitutes in the polymer are a group according to formula (II); n = 5 to 500; B = for example a group of formula (III); A , A , A = for example pyrimidin-2,5-diyl; M , M = for example CO-O or O-CO; M = O, CH2-CH2, O-CO or COO; R = for example alkyl with 1 to 16 atoms of C; a = 2 to 20; b, c, d, e, f, g = 0 or 1, and G = for example alkylene with 1 to 16 atoms of C. Said polymers are suitable for use in electro-optical elements because of their short switching times.

Abstract: Optically active 1,3-dioxolane derivates of the general formula which carry a mesogenic radical in the 4-position are suitable as dopes in - in particular ferroelectric - liquid-crystal mixtures. The symbols in the general formula have the following meanings: R has a structure analogous to the moiety of the general formula on the right of X or is an alkyl or alkylene radical, which may be substituted, R , R and R are H or alkyl (R is alternatively alkenyl), which may also be substituted [R and R , together with the C(2) of the dioxolane ring, may alternatively be cycloaliphatic or keto groups], j, l and n are zero, 1 or 2, and k and m are zero or 1, with the proviso that n is zero if k is zero, m is zero if n is zero, and 1 , -A and -A are an aromatic, heterocyclic or aliphatic ring system, -M and -M are -CO-O, -O-CO, -CH2CH2, -CH=CH, -CH2O, -OCH2 or -C IDENTICAL C and X is O, S or O-CO-O. The particular advantage of the compounds of the general formula (I) is that they are able to induce a high twisting power in the cholesteric phase, but without significantly affecting the magnitude of the spontaneous polarisation already present in the mixture in the smectic C phase. They are therefore suitable for pitch compensation, in particular for ferroelectric liquid-crystal mixtures.

These liquid-crystalline polymers have short response times and high resistance to mechanical stresses. They can be prepared by free-radical polymerization.

Abstract: Novel optically active mesogenic structured oxiran derivs. of formula (I), liq. crystal mixts. contg. (I) as dopant and electro-optical switching or display elements contg. such liq. crystal mixts., are claimed. In (I), R is opt. branched 6-12 alk(en)yl, opt. contg. an asymmetric C atom; M is -O-, -S-, -O.CO-, -CO.O- or -CO-; A is a gp. of formula (II)-(XIV) in which the phenylene rings can have one or two F atoms as substits.; X is MeOCH2CH2OCH2O-, alkoxy, alkylcarbonyloxy, halogen, trialkylsilyl or tetrahydropyranyl; Y is -CH2- or -CO-; n is 1-10; and k is 0 or 1. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are esp. useful at 0.05-70 (esp. 0.1-50) wt.% as dopants in tilted, smectic phases, converting these to ferroelectric phases, spontaneous polarisation valves are in the range 1-15 nC/cm2 at 10 mol.% doping and 25 deg.C extrapolating to valves of 10-150 nC/cm2 for pure (I). Switching times for the mixts. at 25 deg.C with 10 mol.% (I) dosage are often below 100 microsecs. at +/- 10 V/micron switch voltage. Also, (I) can induce very low pitch helices, making them suitable for helix compensation in liq. crystal mixts. (I) also give phases with high electrocline coeffts.
