    Abstract: The novel liquid-crystalline mixtures (in the case of ferroelectric behavior they additionally contain an optically active compound as dope) are constructed from at least 2 mixture components of the general formula (I): (I) wherein n=6 to 14 and x=2 to 14. In addition, the mixtures may also contain cyclohexanecarboxylates of the general formula (II) (II) where R1=(C10-C16) or (C8-C14)alkoxy and R2=(C2-C9)alkyl, alkenyloxyphenylpyrimidine derivatives of the general formula (III) (III) where R3=(C7-C16)alkyl or (C6-C14)alkoxy and y=4-14, and/or alkoxyphenyl derivatives of alkylpyrimidine, of the general formula (IV) (IV) where m and p=6 to 14.

    Abstract: New 3-phenylpyrimidines are of formula (I). In (I), R1 and R2 independently = linear or branched alk(en)yl with k to 16 C atoms, with or without asymmetrical C atoms, in which one or more nonadjacent CH2 gps. can be replaced by -O- or -S-; A and B independently = gps. of formula (a) or (b); R1, 2 = R1 or R2; m and n = 0 or 1 but m and n not both = 1; provided that: a) if m = 0, k = 8 and the CH2 gp. in R2 next to the phenyl ring is replaced by -O-; b) if m = 1 and n = 0, k = 2; and c) is m = 0 and n = 1, k = 2 and the CH2 gp. in R2 next to the phenyl ring is replaced by -O-. The prepn. of (I) is also claimed. 29 cpds. are claimed, including (S)-2-heptylthio-5- (4-(6-methyloctyloxy) phenol-pyrimidine (IA).
