Abstract: A continuous process for the simultaneous preparation of acetic acid and acetic anhydride from a starting mixture of methanol and methyl acetate and, if appropriate, dimethyl ether, by reaction with carbon monoxide under anhydrous conditions at temperatures from 150 to 250 DEG C and under increased pressure in a reaction zone using a dissolved catalyst system containing a nickel compound, methyl iodide as promoter, at least one co-promoter such as alkali metal iodide, quaternary phosphonium iodide or quaternary ammonium iodide, and a cocatalyst, is characterised in that the cocatalyst used is a rhodium or iridium compound in a molar ratio of nickel : cocatalyst of 1 : (0.005 to 0.1), a nickel concentration of 0.01 to 0.1, preferably 0.015 to 0.06 mol/l is established in the reaction zone, and is carried out under an increased pressure of 30 to 100 bar.

Abstract: In a process for removing the metallic corrosion products from a contaminated catalyst solution produced on carbonylation of methanol and/or methyl acetate and/or dimethyl ether and containing carbonyl complexes of rare metals from group VIII of the Periodic Table of the elements, quaternary organo-phosphorus compounds as organic promoters, metallic corrosion products and acetic acid, acetic anhydride, ethylidene diacetate and, in some cases, undistillable organic compounds, the catalyst solution is treated with water, the rare metal carbonyl complex and the undistillable organic compounds, if present, being precipitated, while the organic promoter and the metallic corrosion products remain in solution; the aqueous phase is separated from the precipitated rare metal carbonyl complex and the organic promoter is extracted from the aqueous phase using C4-C8-alkanols, the promoter is recovered by the evaporating extractant, the promoter is recombined with the precipitated rare metal carbonyl complex and with the undistillable organic compounds, if present, and the purified catalyst solution is recycled into the process after addition of acetic acid and/or acetic anhydride; finally, the aqueous phase with the metallic corrosion products is purged.

Abstract: A process is given for removing aldehydes and acetals from technical-grade acetic acid, which is characterised in that the acetic acid with its impurities is allowed to react in the presence of a Brönstedt acid and of 0.05 to 1 per cent by weight of water and, if appropriate, 3 to 10 equivalents, based on aldehyde and acetal, of a higher-boiling polyol with the general structural unit in which n represents an integer from 0 to 3 and m represents an integer greater than 3, at temperatures from 50 to 118 DEG C over a period of 1 to 5 hours and thereupon the pure acetic acid is obtained from the reaction product by fractional distillation.
