Abstract: PROCESS FOR MAKING LONG-CHAIN AMMONIUM POLYPHOSPHATE The invention relates to a process for making long chain ammonium polyphosphate consisting essentially of crystalline modification II. To this end, a mixture of phosphorus pentoxide and ammonium orthophosphate in a molar ratio of 1 : 0.9 to 1 : 1.1 is reacted with 0.1 to 15 mol % of melamine or its condensation products selected from melam, melem or mellon, calculated as melamine, at a temperature within the range 50 to 150.degree.C in the presence of an excess of ammonia and the reaction product is heat-treated at temperatures within the range 200 to 400.degree.C.

Abstract: CONTINUOUS PRODUCTION OF PURE PHOSPHINE Phosphine is continuously produced by reacting yellow phosphorus with an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution in the presence of an alcohol, with the exclusion of oxygen, at 44 to 90.degree.C. To this end, the reaction is effected in two separate reaction stages. In the first reaction stage, the alkali metal hydroxide solution and phosphorus are reacted with agitation in a molar ratio of 0.7:1 to 0.9:1 and the resulting gaseous phosphine is collected. Resulting liquid phase material containing unreacted phosphorus is delivered to the second reaction stage in which the unreacted phosphorus is reacted with further aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution. The resulting gaseous reaction products are collected separately from the gaseous phosphine collected in the first reaction stage.

Abstract: A carrier-supported catalyst for use in the decontamination of motor exhaust gas is produced. The catalyst comprises a honey comb structure of high melting material selected from the group consisting of alumina, cordierite, mullite and mixtures thereof provided with an intermediary layer of alumina as its carrier, and a nickel oxide layer and platinum deposited on said nickel oxide layer as its active ingredients. Typical of catalyst production are the following steps:1) alumina, nickel oxide and platinum, respectively, are deposited on the honey comb structure by first heating it to 300 to 400.degree.C and then dipping it, while hot, into the aqueous solution of the respective salts;2) thoroughly shaking the honey comb structure so provided with layers of alumina and nickel oxide and impregnated with the aqueous solution of the platinum salt so as to expel the excess of said solution retained in the channels of said structure,3) blowing a stream of hot air through the honey comb structure provided with layers of alumina and nickel oxide and impregnated with the platinum salt so as to shorten the drying interval and to diminish the migration of platinum salt from the interior to the periphery of said structure.

Abstract: PRODUCTION OF PHOSPHINE Phosphine is produced from elementary yellow phosphorus and an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution in the presence of an alcohol. The phosphine is more particularly made by using an alcohol having from 5 to 10 carbon atoms and a dissolving power for yellow phosphorus of more than 5 g/l; suspending the phosphorus with agitation in the said alcohol in a reaction zone; reacting the resulting suspension with the alkali metal hydroxide solution at temperatures lower than the boiling point of the alcohol; and collecting the resulting issuing gaseous phosphine.

Abstract: PROCESS FOR REMOVING HYDROCARBONS Off-gas of internal combustion engines is freed from hydrocarbons. To this end, the hydrocarbons are reacted with oxygen-containing gas at temperatures within the range 200 and 800.degree.C in contact with an inert carriersupported catalyst having catalytically active copper, manganese and nickel oxides on the carrier, whereby the hydrocarbons are transformed to carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

Abstract: Production of phosphine. The phosphine is produced by reducing, in a first step, anhydrous zinc phosphate to zinc phosphide by treatment with carbon at a temperature higher than 1000 DEG C, and, in a second step, reacting the zinc phosphide formed in the first step with phosphoric acid. The resulting gaseous phosphine is collected, and the resulting zinc phosphate, which is obtained as a difficultly soluble precipitate, is dried, dehydrated and recycled to the first step.

Abstract: Nitrogen oxides are removed from exhaust gases, particularly from exhaust gases of internal combustion engines or from exhaust gases obtained in the production of nitric acid. To this end, the nitrogen oxides are reduced to nitrogen with the use of a gaseous reductant, in contact with a catalyst and at elevated temperatures. More particularly, the nitrogen oxide-containing gas in admixture with at least stoichiometric proportions, based on the nitrogen content of the gas, of hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide and/or gaseous hydrocarbon reductants, is contacted at temperatures substantially between 150 and 1100 DEG C, with a catalyst comprising a homogeneous mixture of oxides and/or aluminates of copper, nickel and manganese.
