Abstract: A catalyst of high activity and stereospecificity in alpha -olefin polymerization is obtained when titanium trichloride, prepared from titanium tetrachloride by reduction with an aluminum alkyl halide, is thermally treated, first with an ether in the presence of a cyclopolyene and the solid reaction product is then treated with an aluminum alkyl halide in the presence of a small amount of a cyclopolyene and/or an olefin. With the catalyst obtained high space-time yields of alpha -olefin polymers and copolymers can be produced.

Abstract: Catalyst is prepd. by reacting TiCl4 with an organo -Al cpd. contg. a dialkyl Al chloride in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, heat-treating the reaction prod. contg. TiCl3, opt. in the presence of an ehter, sepg. and washing the reaction prod. (component A) and mixing it with a dialkyl -AL halide (component B) and opt. with a cyclopolyene as stereo-regulator (component C). (A) is prepd. by adding the organo -Al cpd. at 20 degrees C to +20 degrees C to the TiCl4 in a mol. ratio of dialkyl Al chloride: TiCl4 of 0. 8:1-1.5:1, the resulting solid prod. being heat-treated at 40-150 degrees C, and then heat-treated again in the presence of a dialkyl ether, and sepd. As alpha-olefin polyms. catalyst, esp. for propylene, and as catalyst for the sequenched copolymsn. of alpha-olefins with each other and/or with ethylene, the polymsns. being effected opt. continuously, in suspension or the gas phase at 1-50 kg/cm2 press./20-120 degrees C. The catalyst has high activity and good stereo specificity (which itself depends on the polymsn. temp.).

Abstract: A polypropylene molding composition of polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymer and polyethylene having a high hardness and increased impact strength and homogeneity after processing is obtained by way of a continuous three-stage polymerization, when the melt viscosities of the polymer mixtures obtained in the individual stages are in a determined ratio of one to the other.

Abstract: In the prodn. of a (Ziegler-Natta type) catalyst, component A is prepd. by reacting TiCl4 with an organo-Al cpd. (I) cntg. R2AlCl (in which R is alkyl) in an inert hydrocarbon solvent (II), sepg. and washing and thermal after-treatment of the reaction prod. (III) suspended in (II) in the presence of an ether, then component A is mixed with R2AlX (in which X is halogen) (component B) and opt. with a cyclopolyene as stereoregulator (component C). To produce component A, (I) is added to TiCl4 at a temp. of -20 to +20, pref. 0 to 5 degrees C in an R2AlCl/TiCl4 molar ratio of 0.8-1.5:1, pref. 0.9-1.1:1 and the suspension of the solid washed (III), treated thermally in the presence of dialkyl ether (IV), is subjected to after-treatment with an alkyl Al halide (V). Used for the polymerisation of alpha-olefins of the formula CH2CHR' (in which R' is 1-8, esp. 1 C alkyl) or their copolymerisation with C2H4, esp. to statistical copolymers with max. 5 wt. % C2H4 or block copolymers with max. 25 wt.% C2H4. Catalyst prodn. costs are reduced by saving 1-3 washing stages, which also reduces plant and material costs and almost eliminates processing of waste liquor contg.

In examples the polymers are prepared by sequential polymerization in the presence of catalysts comprising titanium trichloride and diethyl aluminium chloride.
