    Abstract: The invention concerns a process for preparing organically modified aerogels, in which: a) a silicate-like lyogel or hydrogel is prepared; b) optionally the gel prepared in step a) is subjected to complete or partial conversion of the solvent into an organic solvent; c) the gel obtained in step a) or b) is reacted with at least one silylation agent; d) optionally the silylated gel obtained in step c) is washed with an organic solvent; and e) the gel obtained in step c) or d) is dried subcritically. The invention further concerns the use of these aerogels.

    Abstract: Xerogels are manufactured from a soln. of water glass brought to pH ≤ 3 with an acid ion exchange resin or a mineral acid. The silicic acid obtained is polycondensed to a SiO2 gel by the addn. of a base. If mineral acid was used in the 1st step, the gel is washed free of electrolyte with H2O. Water is removed from the gel by extractive distillation with an organic solvent that forms an azeotrope that separates into 2 phases on cooling. The water content is reduced to ≤ 5 wt.%. The resulting gel is dried at below the critical temp. and below the critical pressure of the organic solvent used for extractive distillation. äU

    Abstract: The uses is claimed of: (i) aerogels (AG) for adsorption from a liquid phase; (ii) hydrophilic or hydrophobic AG as adsorbents; and (iii) adsorbents containing AG (not as a mixture with activated carbon or active alumina) for adsorption from a gas phase. Also claimed are: (a) corresponding purification methods, involving contacting (i') liquids, (ii') gases or liquids or (iii') gases to be purified with adsorbents as in (i), (ii) or (iii) respectively, for adsorption of impurities; and (b) a method for isolating organic compounds (I) from (preferably aqueous) liquids, by contacting the liquids with AG as adsorbent for sufficient time to adsorb (I), separating AG from the liquid and separating (I) from AG.
