Abstract: A sheet aligning mechanism for aligning varied types and weights of sheets which are hand fed thereto includes a continuously rotating feed roll cooperating with a pinch device for urging sheets into both a leading edge aligner and a side edge aligner for leading edge and side edge registration. The feed roll is eccentrically mounted and its clearance with the pinch device is controlled whereby light weight thin sheets are intermittently driven into the aligners. The intermittent sheet drive force prevents sheet buckling and creasing should the operator fail to properly release the sheet. Further, sheet buckling is prevented by the intermittent drive force once the sheet reaches an aligner since the sheet is allowed to restore during the non-drive portion of the feed roll rotation. Once the sheet is properly aligned against both aligners and the utilization device is ready to receive the sheet, an entry gate is actuated and the feed roll forwards the sheet to a sheet take-up device. Thick sheets are continuously driven by the feed roll since they exhibit little propensity toward buckling.

Abstract: A document feed device is disclosed which utilizes intermittently operated endless drive belts to transport a document sheet from an entry guide to an exposure zone and from there to an exit hopper where the drive belts are tensioned over the trailing and leading edges of the work station to provide concentrated drive forces at those points and where the leading edge is slightly elevated from the plane of the work station to provide a region of force relief immediately after passing the leading edge. The document is moved into engagement with the drive belt by picker roll mechanism which controls initiation of feed and is accelerated away from the work station by an accelerator roll arrangement which drives the document at a speed faster than it is normally fed to make room for the next document. Alignment is accomplished by an alignment guide having fingers inter-digitated with the plurality of feed belts and providing a positive stop against which the document is lightly urged by the feed belts. The feed belt/work station surface arrangement is such as to provide an increasing urging force in the direction of feed.

Abstract: A document, which is fed by a single belt, is prevented from wrapping around the belt as it exits from the belt by a plurality of rollers, which are rotated in the same direction as the belt but with a greater peripheral speed. Each of the rollers, which are axially spaced from each other, cooperates with a resiliently biased element to form a nip along the path of the document beyond the exit end of the belt. At their point of engagement with the belt, the peripheral direction of the rollers is opposite to that of the belt to prevent the paper from moving with the belt past this point. Fingers are disposed between the rollers to prevent the document from wrapping around the rollers as it is fed by the rollers. Resiliently biased rollers engage spaced portions of the single belt across its width to provide a driving force from the belt to the document while insuring that the leading edge of the document stops at gate fingers, which have the resiliently biased rollers therebetween and determine the position at which the document is held for reproduction or copying purposes in a photocopy machine prior to being advanced from the copying position by the belt.

Abstract: Apparatus for forming side flap folds in an envelope for a flexible disk wherein the envelope is formed from a flexible plastic prepunched blank having two connected sections. One section of the blank has side flaps extending from the opposite side edges. The blank is folded about an end of a mandrel (34) so that the side flaps (17) extend beyond the side edges of the mandrel. The mandrel (34) holds the plastic blank section having the flaps extending therefrom against the bottom surface of a plate (23). The mandrel has raised edge portions running along the side edges on the outward facing surface thereof. The side flaps (17) are folded around the adjacent edge of the mandrel (34) in an outward folding direction by folding blades (44) which are driven about pivot means (52) to guide the folding blades (44) in an arcuate path. Stops (64) are provided which stop the arcuate motion of the folding blades (44) and allow the upward motion means (54,68) associated with the pivot means (52) in response to the drive means (60) to cause compression of said flaps (17) against the adjacent blank section (16) and mandrel (34) by said folding blades (44) beyond said raised edge portions providing overfold zones adjacent thereto. Infra-red heating means are operable through guide openings (74) in the folding blades (44) adjacent the side folds to provide annealing of the fold thereby relieving any stresses therein.
