    Abstract: The invention concerns a method of controlling a multi-bin sheet collator. Adjacent collator bins are treated as one virtual bin and sheet feeding is controlled appropriately by skipping bins if the number of sets to be collated equals or is smaller than half the number of bins. Thus, multi-page documents having a number of pages exceeding the capacity of a single bin can be collated. In a combined copier/collator the number of copies selected by the operator determines the number of sets, and thus the size and grouping of the virtual bins.

    Abstract: 1,189,252. Magnetic transducers. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 5 Jan., 1968 [9 Jan., 1967], No. 810/68. Heading G5R. A magnetic transducer comprises an unstressed magnetostrictive body 12 having a longitudinal gap 14, an electroacoustic transducer 16 at one end of the body to generate stress waves and a signal coil 28. As shown, an ultrasonic transducer 16 is bonded between electrodes 16, 18 and to a Permalloy or Nickel body 12, the whole being mounted in a fixture. A clock 38 gates digital information at 42 to the coil 28 and controls a generator 30 to set up a stress wave which travels in the direction 24 thereby recording the information in discrete tracks across the tape, which is driven continuously or intermittently and which may be already magnetized in one direction. A separate coil 36 is controlled to revert the head to its original magnetic state and D.C. bias may be applied to the head via coil 28 or a separate coil. The pulses applied to electroacoustic transducer 16 may be bipolar to reduce track width (Fig. 5, not shown) and a number of heads may be placed across the tape width. The information is read out by a similar head or by a transversely scanned head, particularly in NRZ recording.
