Abstract: Automated problem analysis and resolution of a customer data--processing system uses a central service data-processor system (130) communicating with the customer system (110) and having a data base for converting machine, software, and symptom data into instructions, hardware and software module lists, and service call schedules. The customer system detects data concerning its own configuration and problem symptoms for communication to the service system. The service system itself orders repair modules, and electronically communicates software fixes to the customer system.

Abstract: SOFTWARE MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE A software management structure is disclosed. A software application package is made up of several linked replaceable units (RU). Each RU is serviceable without adversely effecting the other RUs. The RUs are linked together in a hierarchical fashion in a series of levels. In the preferred embodiment, five levels are used: Application Group level (AG), Loadable Code Group level (LCG), Primary Functional Group level (PFG), Secondary Functional Group level (SFG), and Operational Code Group level (OCG). The AG level defines a group of computer programs combined to perform a high level application tailor fit to meet the needs of the user. The ECG level defines individual programs each created to perform a general task. The PFG level refines the common programs defined in the LCG level to a more specific set of primary functions. The SFG level refines the primary functions defined in the PFG level to an even more specialized set of secondary functions tailored closely to fit a specific user's needs. The OCG level contains the operational code needed to run the specialized user application package defined by the preceding four levels. Each RU, regardless of level, contains self-identifying and maintenance information, and can also contain a list of hardware and software dependencies unique to that RU. The self identifying, maintenance and dependency information contained in the RUs is also known as vital product data, or VPD.

Abstract: RO9-90-037B FLEXIBLE SERVICE NETWORK FOR COMPUTER SYSTEMS A service network has several computer systems connected together. A computer system can either be a "Service Requestor" (SR), a "Service Provider" (SP), or a hybrid of the two, a "Service Provider/Requestor" (SP/R). Once the service network is established, a SR can automatically detect problems with it s components (hardware, software, or microcode), build a service request describing the problem, select a SP/R responsible for fixing the problem, and send the service request to that SP/R. The SP/R responsible for fixing the problem receives the service request, verifies that the SR is entitled to receive service, and checks a solution log to see if it has the solution for the problem. If so, solution information describing the fix for the problem, accompanied by one or more software components, microcode components, hardware parts order, and/or textual instructions, is sent down to the SR. If the responsible SP/R cannot fix the problem, it checks to see if it receives support for this problem from any other SPs or SP/Rs to which it is connected. If so, it sends the service request on to this SP or SP/R, which may in turn send the service request on to other SPs or SP/Rs until a fix is found. The SP or SP/R can also perform remote problem detection and determination on a SR.

Abstract: Program developers use the program packaging tools of the invention to create programs packaged in four levels: LCG (2000), PFG (3000), SFG (4000, and OCG (5000). An application developer uses the application packaging tools of the invention to combine several of these program packages together to create an application package. This is done by adding the AG level (1000) on top of the four levels pf the selected program packages. In addition, the application developer can select certain primary and secondary functions of the selected program packages while omitting other primary and secondary functions of the selected program packages. The packaging structure and packaging tools of the subject invention gives the developers the power and flexibility to create an application opackage tailor fit to meet the needs of a specific user.
