Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve the file performance by supporting a magnetoresistive sensor on the rear end of a carrier put on a liquid bearing at the time of bring ing a magnetic recording transducer into contact with a magnetic recording disk during the read or write operation to make a disk file or a disk drive. CONSTITUTION: A transducer carrier 20 consists of a liquid bearing 50 provided on a disk 16 and a magnetic read/induction write head 42 provided on a rear end 44. A magnetic read sensor 60 and an induction write head 62 are formed as thin film layers on the rear end of the carrier 20, and an end part 61 of the sensor 60 is placed between shields 62 and 63 arranged apart from each other. An induction write head 70 constituting the head 42 consists of a coil 73 and a recording gap 75 and is oriented to the surface of the disk 16. The part 61 of the sensor 60 is brought into contact with a liquid bearing 50 provided on the disk 16, and head design is made free so as to be suitable for write because it is unnecessary for the head 70 to read data recorded on the magnetic layer of the disk 16.

Abstract: A contact magnetic recording rigid disk file utilizes a magnetoresistive (MR) sensor for reading data recorded on the disk. The disk file may be of the liquid-bearing type of contact recording with the MR sensor supported on the trailing end of a carrier which rides on the liquid bearing. The performance of the disk file is enhanced by including means for minimizing the effect of a discovered baseline read signal modulation. The modulation has been determined to be caused by variable cooling of the temperature-sensitive and temperature-elevated MR sensor by the disk, with the temperature variation being directly related to the variation in head-disk spacing caused by the waviness of the surface of the disk. A filter may be incorporated into the read signal processing circuitry of the disk file to eliminate the modulation, the MR sensor may be designed to operate at selected parameters to minimize the effect of the baseline modulation, and the portion of the carrier in contact with the disk surface may be selected to have a length less than the period of the disk waviness so that it more closely follows the disk surface topography.

Abstract: Described is a transducer assembly for use in a disk file which provides substantially reduced head-disk spacing and a corresponding improvement in recording performance. The assembly includes a transducer carrier with feet which ski on a high viscosity liquid film with which the disk is coated. Also described is a disk file incorporating such a transducer assembly.

Abstract: A data recording disk file of the liquid-bearing type has an improved head-disk interface provided in by a transducer carrier (100) with new properties. The carrier (100) supports a conventional head (109) for reading and writing data to the disk (130). The carrier has an air-bearing surface (110,112) near its front end, a ski pad (118) near its rear end, and a plurality of ski feet or struts (120,122) which support the air-bearing surface off the liquid film (146) of the disk when the disk file is not operating. The air-bearing surface is in the form of a pair of air-bearing rails (110,112) located outboard of the rear ski pad so that no air-bearing effect occurs in the rearward region of the carrier to assure the skiing action of the rear ski pad. As operational speed is approached the air-bearing lifts the struts off the disk and the rear ski pad is the sole ski foot on the liquid film. The rear ski pad has a convexly shaped leading edge which is wider than its trailing edge to minimize static friction and lubricant thinning during skiing, and the angle between the leading and trailing edges of the pad is selected to enable the pad to ski over the wide ranges of carrier-disk velocity which occur as the carrier moves from disk ID to OD.

Abstract: A disk file is described with substantially reduced head-disk spacing and corresponding improvement in recording performance which uses a disk coated with a film of conventional high viscosity lubricant, a lubricant reservoir for replenishing the lubricant on the disk over the life of the file, and a transducer carrier with feet which ski on the high viscosity liquid film. The file does not include any means for recirculating the lubricant since the lubricant spins off the disk at a relatively low rate due to its high viscosity. The lubricant reservoir contains a very small amount of lubricant and thus may be maintained inside the substantially sealed disk file. In one embodiment of the invention, the sealed disk file is essentially evacuated. The operation of the disk file in a near vacuum environment is possible because, unlike conventional disk files, air is not required to support an air-bearing head-disk interface and the high vapor pressure of the relatively high molecular weight lubricant prevents its evaporation.

Abstract: A method for recording, reading and erasing data bits in a data storage device is described. Using extended scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) techniques, a tunnelling electron current by resistive heating selectively melts discrete areas of a state-transformable film; then heat is dissipated rapidly, writing data bits by changing the film in the areas from a first state to a second state wherein an electronic property, such as conductance, work function or band gap, in the areas is changed. Again, using extended STM techniques, the effect of this changed electronic property of the film on the tunnelling current is measured for reading the written data bits. Minimising the effect of blemishes on the material is effected, during operation in STM constant current mode by measuring dI/dV or dI/ds, and during operation in STM variable current (constant gap) mode by measuring (dI/dV)/I or (dI/ds)/I. Also, by using extended STM techniques, data bits can be selectively erased by resistance heating the film to a temperature higher than the crystallisation temperature for a sufficient period of time, restoring selected discrete areas to the first state and each affected electronic property substantially to its original condition.
