    Abstract: Semiconductor optical head structure for accessing storage locations on an optical storage medium, such as an optical disk, for writing, erasing, and reading of information, including tracking-error detection and focusing-error detection systems. Both error detection systems are optical and electrical separated to avoid any mutual interferences of the error signals, and all optical elements of the optical head are integrated on one chip. The focusing-error signal is generated by deflecting a separate beam (20A) out of the optical head (15) and focusing it onto the surface (12) of an optical disk (11) and detecting the reflected portion (20B) thereof. The separate readout and tracking-error signal is generated employing light beam (21A) which is focused to the center of the pits (10) of a track and detecting the diffracted portion (21B) thereof. Focusing-errors can be reduced by actuating the head perpendicular to the disk (11) using coil (22). If a tracking-error is measured the head can be moved using actuator (17), until the error is minimized. The required optical head can be grown on a compound semiconductor material, such as GaAs, using planar fabrication technology.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a method for efficient and self-aligned laser to waveguide coupling being an important step towards higher integration of opto-electronic circuits. For automatic alignment of an optical waveguide (67 - 69) to a ridge waveguide laser (50 - 52), the ridge structure (54) of the laser is transferred into the substrate (50) by etching the mirror groove. The transferred ridge structure (55) serves as base for the deposition of the waveguide layers (67 -69), their thickness being controlled during the deposition such that the waveguide core (69) is laterally and vertically aligned to the lasing active layer (51) of the laser structure (50 - 52).
