Abstract: POLYIMIDE RIBBON AND METHOD FOR THERMAL PRINTING This invention comprises a resistive layer of a thermal transfer medium which is a mixture of a thermosetting polyimide and a thermoplastic polyimide with a particulate conductive material, which may be graphite. The resistive layer of blended polyimides is advantageously laminated to a very thin layer of silicon dioxide which provides heating properties near the printing area. The thermosetting polyimide is commercially available as a liquid in a high-boiling organic solvent system. The thermoplastic polyimide is commercially available as a solid, and is known to be readily soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and many other organic solvents. A blend of the two with appropriate solvents and filler of particular conductive material such as graphite is solid to the touch within 60 seconds at room temperature. After subsequent treatment at elevated temperature to set the thermosetting resin, a thermal ribbon is achieved having the necessary physical integrity and exceptionally good resistance to degradation during use in the thermal printing process. The element is strong and abrasion resistant, and has electrical resistivity well suited to the thermal printing. LE9-81-010

Abstract: 1402240 Electrography INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 30 May 1973 [30 June 1972] 25818/73 Heading G2H A heat-fixable resinous toner image carried by a substrate is fixed by heating the powder image by means of a fixing rotary member having a release agent on the surface thereof, the release agent comprising two liquids immiscible in one another and chemically stable at the temperature of the surface of the rotary member, the liquids each having a low surface tension relative to the toner and one of the liquids having a viscosity which is high relative to the other at the temperature of the surface of the rotary member. Preferably the high viscosity component is solid at room temperature with a well defined melting point and is wettable by the low viscosity liquid, so that the release agent mixture can be formed into a block which can be progressively melted against the surface of a heated spreader roll in rolling contact with a fusing roll that fixes the image. Suitable high viscosity components include a 2000 cs. silicone oil and a number of specified metallic soaps or the saturated fatty acids from which they are derived, the latter being used in conjunction with a fusing roll surface of aluminium or zinc with which the acid will react to form the soap in situ. The 2000 cs. silicone oil or the soaps (but not the free acids) may also be used with gold surfaced fusing rolls. The preferred release agent comprises zinc stearate or behenate as the high viscosity component, mixed with a 50 cs. silicone oil, and is used in conjunction with an aluminium surfaced fusing roll.
