Abstract: MODIFIED RESISTIVE LAYER IN THERMAL TRANSFER MEDIUM A thermal ribbon having a minute coating of graphite powder on the outer side of the resistive layer. The improved electrical interface with print electrodes reduces ribbon and printhead damage. The graphite also reduces friction and loosens material which builds-up at the printhead.

Abstract: INTERMEDIATE LAYER IN THERMAL TRANSFER MEDIUM In accordance with this invention a transfer medium for thermal printing is disclosed which has a very thin layer of silicon dioxide as a lamination on the resistive layer. A heat-flowable layer of marking material can be used on the side opposite the resistive layer. A typical embodiment has a resistive layer comprising a particulate, conductive filler material and a polymeric binder; a layer of silicon dioxide; a metal layer contacting the silicon dioxide opposite the resistive layer; and a solid, meltable ink on the other side of the metal layer. Abstract: DRIVE FOR THERMAL PRINTING LIFT-OFF CORRECTION Ribbon (22) in thermal printing has an outer layer which adheres to printed characters at intermediate temperatures, lower than printing temperatures. The printhead (7) has a column of electrodes (9) which sweep across the character area. Lift-off is accomplished by the pattern control (40) controlling the current source (38) to provide rapid, square wave pulses displaced in phase 180 degrees at adjoining electrodes (9). The high level of the pulses is about that of the level at printing, and the pulses are sufficiently rapid so that their net effect is to raise the outer layer ribbon (22) to the intermediate temperature. At areas corresponding to underlines of characters, duration of the up period is longer. Good, long term reliability is achieved by the significant erase level being very close to the print level.

Abstract: ESCAPEMENT MECHANISM FOR TYPEWRITERS Disclosed is a mechanism for replacing the non-escape-ment magnet normally utilized to inhibit escapement during certain machine functions on a typewriter. A detent arm is connected to the normal pawl knock-off arm so that upon the print shaft rotating and effecting, by a cam thereon, movement of associated linkage and motion of the knock-off arm to disengage the pawl from the ratchet wheel, the detent arm associated with the knock-off arm detents the ratchet wheel and inhibits escapement thereof until the linkage and knock-off arm returns to its normal position by rotation of the print shaft. Thus, if the escapement magnet coil is not energized, the pawl associated with the magnet will return to its normal position and the ratchet wheel will, because of the detent of the member associated with the knock-off arm, be inhibited from motion.
