Abstract: In a data processing system having a non-volatile memory for storing information on system configuration also after the system is turned off, if information on new system configuration is set up, the newly set up information is stored not only into a predetermined area of said non-volatile memory, but also into a second non-volatile memory such as a disk storage apparatus, etc. different from said non-volatile memory or an area other than said predetermined area of said non-volatile memory and if changes to the system configuration are detected, for example, at a self-diagnostic test at the time of the supply of power to the system, a check of whether or not information that accords with the information on the current system configuration exists in said second non-volatile memory or the area other than said predetermined area of said non-volatile memory, is made and if accordance is obtained, the appropriate information is transferred to said predetermined area of said non-volatile memory.

Abstract: A computer unit and multiple I/O adapter units are interconnectable in a variety of different plug attachment configurations which may be frequently altered in normal use of the system. An arrangement is provided for automatically initializing adapter units which are currently connected to the computer unit to operating states uniquely suited to the current configuration of connections. In the arrangement, non-volatile storage means retentively stores multiple sets of configuration state information, each set corresponding to a different configuration of connections between the adapter units and the computer unit. Means operating during each initialization of the system detects identities (ID's) of adapter units currently connected to the computer unit, and compares them to ID's associatively stored with the configuration state information. When a corresponding set of ID's is found, the associated configuration state information is retrieved and used for initializing the currently connected adapter units to operating states uniquely suited to the detected configuration of ID's. In the disclosed embodiment, information associated with the adapter unit configuration existing when system power was last turned off is stored in both a non-volatile RAM (NVRAM) and in a reserved area of a hard disk drive (HDD) which holds information associated with both the presently existing adapter configuration and previously existing configurations. Detected ID's of currently connected adapter units are compared first to identity information in NVRAM, and if a match is detected the associated state information in NVRAM is used to initialize the currently connected adapter units. If a mismatch is detected, the detected unit ID's are compared to sets of ID's contained in index functions stored in the HDD. If a match is found in this comparison, configuration state information associated with the respective index function is retrieved, written to NVRAM and applied to the currently connected adapter units. This arrangement is particularly useful for automatically initializing portable computer systems which can operate either standalone or docked/connected to one or more desktop expansion units.

Abstract: The invented initialization method relates of a data processing system being provided with a non-volatile storage means (7) for retentively storing multiple sets of configuration state information, provided information of the new configuration of the system is logged. The new logged information is stored not only onto the predetermined area of the non-volatile storage means (7) but also onto a non-volatile secondary storage device (9) such as a hard disk drive and the like, different from the non-volatile storage means (7) or area other than the predetermined area of the non-volatile storage means (7) If changes are detected in the system configuration, for example during automatic diagnostic test at the time when power is applied to the system, a check is carried out whether there is available or not information that is identical with information about actual system configuration contained in the non-volatile secondary storage device (9) or area other than the predetermined area of the non-volatile storage means (7) and if a match is found the relevant information is transferred to the predetermined area of the non-volatile storage means (7).

Abstract: PURPOSE: To manage the ID numbers (identification information) of the connected built-in SCSI devices of an information processor which has two or more build-in SCSI devices and can connect the SCSI devices even to the outside through connection ports without user intervention. CONSTITUTION: ID numbers can be read from and written in built-in SCSI devices. Such numbers which do not come into collision with the ID numbers of SCSI device connected to the outside are selected as the ID numbers of the built-in SCSI devices. The writing of such ID numbers is automatically performed on a system 10 side at the time of performing boot processing or when the system configuration changes. Even when SCSI hard disk devices are installed to both the inside and outside, the inside hard disk device can be designated by reading the ID number of the hard disk device.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To eliminate the need of generating the information of system constitution again when changed system constitution was adopted in the past even if the system constitution is changed. CONSTITUTION: In the case of newyly setting up information related to a system constitution in the data processing system having a nonvolatile memory 7 for storing the information of system constitution also after turning off a system power supply, the newly set information is stored in a prescribed area of the memory 7 and stored also in a 2nd non-volatile memory 9 such as a display storage device different from the memory 7 or an area other than the prescribed area of the memory 7. When a change in the system constitution is detected in a self-diagnosis or the like when the system power supply is turned on, whether information coincident with the information of current system constitution is stored in the memory 9 or an area other than the prescribed area of the memory 7 or not is retrieved, and when the coincident information is stored, the corresponding information is transferred to the prescribed area of the memory 7.
